Was it nerve-wrecking at all having a hero like Reed, who isn't very likeable at first?

Not really! When the story first opens Ella is really the hero, or the only one who's put into the hero role.. so by the time Reed comes in as a "hero" the reader already has time to sort of digest who he is deep down.
