Hi Ms. Levine! Rhys and Char are two of my favourite fictional boys. I was wondering which are your favourites? I saw that Char was inspired by Mr. Darcy. Did you have any characters in mind that influenced Rhys? Thank you!

Gail Carson Levine I don't think I did. This is a weird answer, but creating new human characters is similar to creating new imaginary creatures. For creatures, I think, I want a dragon, and the story needs her to be evil, but evil how? What have I done before? How can I do it differently this time? For human characters, I want a male lead, and the story needs him to be good and kind, but in what way? How can I portray him differently this time? I start to think of variables, and gradually the character emerges.
