Goodreads asked Sherwood Smith:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Sherwood Smith Heh--I can't help but think that unasked-for advice is the easiest thing to dispense, and the last thing anyone else wants. But why not offer these two things:

First, write what excites you. Really, don't worry about what "the market" wants because that changes every day. If you are not excited, it's just about 100% guaranteed your readers won't be.

And second, get fresh eyes as a beta, if you can. Not a friend, a spouse, a student, because they are already invested, just like you. Only fresh eyes can really gauge how much of your excitement actually made it to the page.
