Hi Nadia.. I've read all 3 of your fiction novels and I am a huge fan. I am so fascinated with Middle Eastern culture, especially bacha posh. I was wondering about something. For a challenge I am participating in, I have to read a book with a LGBTQ+ character and I wanted your opinion on whether A Pearl That Broke Its Shell would qualify? I didn't think so.. but I thought I would ask!
Nadia Hashimi
Hello and thank you for reading! I'm always glad for challenges that bring us diverse characters and expand representation. I don't The Pearl That Broke Its Shell qualifies for the challenge because a bacha posh isn't really about gender identity or orientation. It's more of an exploration of patriarchy. Thankfully, we're seeing more and more LGBTQ+ representation on the shelves. Enjoy the challenge!

I heard on a podcast you did with C.P. Leslie of New Historical Books (http://newbooksinhistoricalfiction.com/2014/10/21/nadia-hashimi-the-pearl-that-broke-its-shell-william-morrow-2014/) that you are coming out with a new book in the summer of 2015. Can you tell me a bit about this new book? (It was a very good interview, BTW, and I would recommend that your readers check it out on the website above.)

I wish the book would have ended with some factual information about women's progress in Afghanistan to-date. A mention of perhaps a trustworthy organization that helps with women's rights there would have been great. The comment on the 9-11 attacks was mentally provoking. Would you consider a 2nd book I touching on the Afghanistan's view of America, Americans, and our involvement in the war?

Hi Nadia. I just finished listening to your book "The Pearl That Broke Its Shell" on audiobooks. The person narrating this book, (I believe last name Hammond) did an outstanding job. I felt like Rahima was my companion story teller and I miss her! I was expecting to follow Shakiba right until the point where she becomes Rahima's great grandmother. Just wondering why you didn't make that connection? Still loved it!
