This question contains spoilers… (view spoiler)[Your book struck a chord with me and it was tough reading. My Mother's name was Alta Grace and Bertie's story was so similar to my mother's. The exception being, my grandfather died of consumption leaving a young wife and seven children and half brothers and sisters which my mother provided care and mothered. I am an only child.
