Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Lawrence Wright The filmmaker Ridley Scott approached me a decade ago with a question. He had read Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel, "The Road." Ridley's question was "What happened?" What force could have crushed civilization? I immediately thought of something like the 1918 Spanish flu, appearing now when people live in dense cities and travel across the globe so rapidly. Would we be any better prepared than our ancestors?

Thanks for the opportunity to ask a question! Your books seem to be about a much wider variety of topics and themes than a lot of authors. How do you choose what to write about next? Is there a theme that underlies all of your book topics?

I enjoyed "Going Clear" as an excellent exploration of the dark side of human nature through the prism of a cult religion. I understand that a fiction pandemic thriller is a very different writing effort, but did your nonfiction career inform your new writing effort, either regarding human nature, the role of research in establishing realism, or some other way?
