I read the book before watching the television mini series (The Looming Tower) and felt that many important things were left out. Do you think a movie could have been a better depiction of the book? Did you have a say in which format the book could be adopted into?

Over the years there were several approaches to make The Looming Tower into a movie, but it never felt right. The story was too big, and I was worried that the tone would be -- I don't know -- not sufficiently respectful, I suppose. Finally it became clear that the project was going to happen one way or another, so I became a producer in order to have some control over the subject. The network, Hulu, only wanted the John O'Neill portion of the story. I wish we could have done more.

"The Looming Tower" is one of my favorite books (and a pretty good Hulu series as well). I was astounded by the amount of research that must have gone into it. How long did that take? How does your level of research compare in your non-fiction and fiction works? I just moved to Houston to work at the Chronicle and found "God Save Texas" to be very enlightening. I'm becoming a fan.
