Dear Lisa See, Do you consider ever in the future approach non-Asian themes? I honestly love all your books, but I'm curious if you would dedicate your time to different topics too. Many thanks! A passionate reader known as Sneerkat.

Thank you for your kind words about my books. I'm so glad you've enjoyed them! But to answer your question, why not write about China? It’s beautiful. It has a rich and deep culture that very few people—even Chinese!—understand or know fully. The country accounts for a quarter of the world’s population. It’s a global economic superpower. With all the stresses in the world, we need to know more about China, not less. I’m doing what I can to help others learn about China not in an academic essay but through stories. It’s through fiction that we connect to real people and by extension to the shared human condition. I’m interested in finding the universals through the uniqueness that is China.

Hi Lisa, I don't have a question, ?? but I wanted you to know that I was at my local Library Book Store and asked the volunteer if she had a favorite author or book, she told me Snowflower and the Secret Fan, I am now a fan of yours for life. So excited about your new book and we are planning to read it in our book club. Congratulations to you! Carol Laguna Niguel, CA

I'm reading Lady Tan, and I'd assumed the characters were using Mandarin. The main character indicates that she uses "he" to refer to a baby in the womb and this subtlety wasn't lost on her listner. However, in spoken Mandarin there is no difference in "he" and "she"; they are both "ta." The difference is only in the written character. I'm curious: is this is an oversight/mistake? And if not, how did she say "he"?
