Thanks for reading the books, I'm glad you enjoy them!

In terms of the magic systems, I draw heavily from my background as a game designer for creating them and implementing them in the world. This doesn't mean all of my systems are necessarily "gamey", although some of them are -- the main thing that I try to keep in mind is how to make systems that are going to provide interesting and diverse character skill sets, and then how those skill sets would influence society, culture, religion, commerce, etc.

Beyond that, I strongly recommend watching Brandon Sanderson's lecture series on youtube. He's a master of magic system building and his classes are an excellent resource.
