Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Lucy Foley This is a really difficult question! I've just tried to respond to it in three different ways, and had to delete them all and start again. The answer is that inspiration came from many different places: family stories, trips to art galleries, reading about the eras involved, the characters themselves (who came to me before the plot), novels, my imagination. I wish that I could say there was a lightening bolt moment and the idea arrived fully formed but, to be honest, there were parts of the plot that didn't develop until well into the writing process. Arguably, though, that is all part of the fun!
