For me, the best thing is when something happens that I didn't plan. I'm typing along and a character falls off her chair, and I have no idea why. Did she have a heart attack? Was she poisoned? Did she faint? I typed the darn thing and am surprised. This is magic, and I love it.
But second best is hearing from readers that they loved my books. That they were surprised. That they learned something. Also magical.
