Goodreads asked Elizabeth Varlet:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Elizabeth Varlet I have a lot of experience with writer's block. It took me over ten years to finish Abounding Dawn, and that was mostly because of fear, but also lack of understanding of my own characters.

In order to avoid this as much as possible, I've become a much better plotter. I take time to get to know my characters before I start writing.

I find whenever the words don't seem to flow easily, it's because something is wrong and I'm forcing things. When this happens I try to take a step back and work out what the issue is.

It's perfectly okay, in my opinion, to take a day or two (or even a week if necessary) to get your head back on straight before powering through. If you allow yourself this time and don't torture yourself or give into the guilt of not writing everyday. Then it will be easier to untangle whatever mess you have and get back on track.
