Robin Maxwell
Robin Maxwell asked Shauna Roberts:

You enjoy reading historical fiction and science fiction (like me). Would you be interested in reading in the "historical science fiction" genre (I made it up to describe my just-published tenth novel - ATLANTOS?

Shauna Roberts Yes, that genre would interest me. I've written a novella in that genre myself ("The Measure of a Man"), and one of my favorite sf books of the past several years is Eifenheim by Michael Flynn, in which a Medieval village struggles to understand the alien—and the meaning of existence of the alien—that's crashed in their village.

Did you write to offer me a copy of your book, ask me to read your book and review it, or judge interest in the genre? I did come across Atlantos recently, probably in LOCUS and was interested in it, but I've been trying not to buy spec fic until after World Fantasy Con because I'm hoping to get a lot of free books there.

In sequence, yes, I'd love a copy of your book if you're offering one. I'll write a review if I buy it or get a copy from you or elsewhere. Yes, this genre interests me, but I love things that veer off the beaten path, whereas my impression is that many readers prefer to read variations on the same story.

I didn't read your book Jane, but that would be historical science fiction too, wouldn't it?

I'm honored that such a distinguished novelist wrote to someone starting out, like me. Two of your books are sitting among my to-read piles (Wild Irish and Signora da Vinci), and I gave one of my nieces your The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn. Thank you for contacting me. I just sent you an email to add me to your Friends List.
