John asked Susan C. Shea:

Is Susan C Shea a pseudonym? Why do so many authors adopt a pseudonym? In your opinion what are the significant benefits to there use?

Susan C. Shea No, it's for real. There are so many reasons why authors do it, and they change over time. Some do it to disguise their gender (using initials is one way) because they think readers will make inaccurate assumptions about the book if they identify it with a woman or a man. Today, with the onset of book sale tracking, authors whose previous books haven't done terribly well might be tempted to start 'fresh' with a new name and a clean slate when they are trying to sell their books. I am thrilled that Minotaur has given me a two-book contract for a new series set in rural France, even though their research will show I'm a midlist (not best-selling ona national scale) author.
