Hi Ruta! Firstly, I love your books so much! They have inspired me and introduced me to the world of historical fiction and I now think that I want to become a historical fiction author when I am older..! :) My questions are: What is your favourite bit about writing historical fiction that is different to writing general fiction? And also What are the things that inspire you to write most? Thank you! :)

Hello Faith,
I am so honored to learn that my books have inspired you to write historical fiction! You can do it!
Writing historical fiction is like being a detective. I love discovering secrets, hidden facts, and hidden heroes. Sometimes history can be perceived as boring. But through characters and story, historical statistics become human and suddenly we care for people we've never met, we can find their country on a map, and then - the history matters. Through historical fiction we can give voice those who will never have a chance to tell their story. That inspires me!
Thanks so much for asking and best of luck with your writing! :)

Hi Ruta! I really enjoyed Salt to the Sea and can't wait to get to Between Shades of Grey. I am curious, 1) What's your favourite quote? 2) Since your academic background & career and books are so diverse. Are there any intersections? How did your career influence your writing? If you are ever in East Africa coast ( read: Kenya) , please let us know.
