Alvina asked Laura Kaye:

Laura, I always appreciate how fleshed out, realistic, and respectful your characters are to each other; everyone regardless of gender, orientation, and colour are well treated in your novels. Do you ever struggle with your characterizations?

Laura Kaye Hi Alvina - Thank you! My characters always feel real to me, so I'm glad that comes across on the page! <3 Usually, the characters come to me first, even before some of the plot, so I often have a good sense of them even when I'm first starting a book. Occasionally, the nuances of a character's motivations or backstory remain murky until maybe 1/3 or 1/2 way through the book, and then BAM, clarity! And I'll have to go back and tweak the earlier sections to reflect my new understanding. Sometimes you just have to write a character until they start speaking to you, or speaking more clearly. For me, though, characters are usually one of the easier parts of writing. :)
