Rachel (perks53) Hi, I have, just joined this group and am looking forward to starting the Killings.... I bought this book on Kobo for $12.95, that's Ausie dollars. Has the group read any books by Kate Atkinson?
Regards Rachel

Lorraine (saanichlori) I've read her entire Jackson Brodie series - they're very good, a little quirky. The first one is Case Histories.

message 3: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar Love the Jackson Brodie series. Have been putting off reading the last one though because I've heard it ends on a cliffhanger, so want to read as close as possible to the next one :-).

message 4: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (perks53) Glad to hear there a few fans. I think Case Histories is my favorite so far but When Will There Be Good News is a close second. They quirky to be sure!

Rachel (perks53) Jean-Luke wrote: "This is only our second BOTM, Rachel. I haven't personally read any Kate Atkinson, but I'm someone else here has. Any particular book by her you'd like to suggest for the October BOTM?"

Hi Jean Luke, I would probably recommend Case Histories, it's very quirky for a murder story! I am a dedicated fan of English crime, both books and TV, can't get enough of it really! Very glad you people are around!

Hey there, I think I am a bit mixed up with the series, which one is the last?

message 7: by Jemidar (last edited Aug 30, 2012 04:48AM) (new)

Jemidar The latest (4th) one is Started Early, Took My Dog and the cliffhanger I believe is a relationship one so I'm waiting eagerly for news of the 5th one before starting it as I'm sure I'll be pacing the floor wanting to know what happens next. I adored 1-3 and have also enjoyed Atkinson's non-mystery books :-).

Have you seen the TV series based on the first three books?

message 8: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) I eagerly watch the TV series and was a little disappointed that they changed the story a little, but they were still good. Wish they would film Started Early, Took My Dog - that's a particular favourite of mine. But can't remember the cliffhanger ending.

message 9: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar I only have the cliff hanger bit on hearsay and I believe it involves Jackson's relationship with Louise. Love those two to bits so thought I'd play it safe! Really looking forward to reading it though.

I've got the DVDs of the series here but just haven't got around to watching them. Did they change it very much? Anything that mattered?

message 10: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) Changes that I can remember: Case Histories - Brodie was living and working in Oxford, but the film he's in Edinburgh. 2nd book - quite a different ending. 3rd book - again, small changes from the novel. Well worth seeing, but I don't think there's any mention of his house in France and he doesn't listen to American country music!

message 11: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar Well, I'm glad about the country music as I'm not a fan of it myself and reading about someone listening to it and actually having to listen to it are two different things entirely. And yes, I had heard they'd moved all the action to Edinburgh.

Must make time to watch these soon!

message 12: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) I'm a fan of kate Atkinson's mysteries too and would be happy to vote for one of her books for Book of the Month.

message 13: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (perks53) First time I have ever heard of the tv series, we don't have it in Australia but I will be working hard to try and find it. I don't think the ending of what I think is Started Early.........is cliff hanger but that might not be the book you mean.

message 14: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar Rachel, I'm pretty sure Case Histories was shown here on the ABC as I remember seeing the adds and thinking how well cast Jackson was but didn't watch it because at that stage I hadn't read the first three books. At any rate, the DVDs are available which is the route I went.

Kim (kimmr) I also got the dvds. They're available at JB Hifi and also at the ABC shop.

Leslie | 1664 comments Case Histories was just recently rerun here in Mass -- PBS Masterpiece Mysteries.

Kim (kimmr) That's great, Rachel. I'm glad the dvds were in stock. (Love going to the ABC shop - there's always good stuff there that I didn't know about!)

They weren't on ABC. They were on PBS. They were quite good but I am glad I read the books before seeing them.

message 23: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar We were referring to which channel showed them in Australia as Rachel, Kim and I live there. BTW, our ABC is a public broadcaster like your PBS.

message 24: by Susan (new)

Susan | 606 comments Whoops. I am so sorry I put my foot in my mouth. But while I have you, I'd like to ask you something. When I was in Austrailia I was shocked at the price of books there. Was it my imagination or are they very
expensive there?

message 25: by Jemidar (last edited Sep 04, 2012 05:25PM) (new)

Jemidar No worries :-).

And yes, books are very expensive here. You can order them from either the US or the UK and even with shipping they are often still cheaper than buying them here. It's one of the reasons I love my Kindle so much--cheap books!

It's a great shop, so much to watch so little time!

Jemidar Love the ABC Shop :-).
