Letters from the Inside
question
What do you think About The Ending & What Do you think happened?
Okay, so my personal opinion is this:
Steve went off the rails (we can see the decline of his mental health in Mandy's letters) and killed his whole family, then possibly committed suicide.
Mandy and her parents are definitely dead, as they would have written to Tracey to tell her what had happened if they were alive. Mandy's dad was in prison as a teenager and has empathy for Tracey. Mandy's mum cares enough about Tracey to try and sneak her chocolate in the Christmas package. Because of this, I believe they must be dead to have not said anything to Tracey.
Katrina (Mandy's older sister) may or may not be dead. She doesn't live at the house, so would have had to come over when the attack happened, and doesn't know about Tracey. Because of this, she may not write back even if she is alive.
I believe that the attack occurred on Dec. 26, when Tracey had the dream with the blood, knives and guns. Marsden has linked the ending to this letter, so I think we can assume that this is the approximate date and nature of the attack. The date may also mean that Katrina is dead, as she would have come over for Christmas.
Without the support of Mandy, it appears that Tracey has had a nervous breakdown. The shaking, the passive isolation of her watching the world, her moving from A block and the way she is being treated all suggest that she is having trouble coping and has a mental illness. Maybe by this point she knows or has guessed what happened to Mandy, and is trying to come to terms with it. Her last letter seems to confirm this, as she says goodbye to Mandy, as if she doesn't ever expect to see or hear from Mandy again.
So, to summarise, Mandy and her parents are dead, Steve and Katrina are maybe dead, Steve killed his family after going off the rails, this happened around Dec. 26, knives, guns and blood were involved, Tracey suffered a mental breakdown and possibly knows Mandy is dead.
