I always wonder what people do for jobs that allows them so much time to faff around on the Internet with me.

I work for a group of Stock Brokers. I'm fully licensed, but not much of a salesperson (I'd starve), so I just work for 5 of them. We use to work at a large-ish regional firm where I worked for 9 or more brokers and would have been in big trouble if I got caught screwing around on company time. But, my current 5 guys left and went independent and took me with them. Now, it's just the 5 of them and me in a small office over on the West side of town. If my work is done, they don't care what I do. I can crochet a blanket, watch Netflix, talk to y'all, Facebook, play video games, read a book. It's great. I'm here for 8 hrs total and I'd say that the average Monday I work about 3-4 hrs and that amortizes as the week goes on. Fridays are REALLY quiet (usually, there are always exceptions).

What do you do?

Susan | 6406 comments Well, I am a new stay-at-home mom. Clearly, this is why I am on here so much. But, I work on weekends (not all) at my old job doing Calligraphy, French Mat painting and French Lines, a bit o' touch ups on paintings and some faux finishing on frames. I also, from time to time, bring projects home and work on them.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Sweet! My husband used to be really into Calligraphy. I tried, I suck. But, I LOVE art. And, I'd totally be a stay-at-home mom in a heart beat if I had the opportunity!

Chris (bibliophile85) Technically I'm unemployed right now. I HATE being without a job...makes me feel useless and bum-like.

But I do earn a little money by tutoring high school and college age students in their creative writing skills.

I have my B.A in English and am planning to return to school soon to complete my Masters so I can become a full-time teacher.

Before that, I worked as a copy-editor at a local newspaper and various retail positions.

Its my dream to teach young people about literature, writing, of fools and chips and sinking ships of cabbages and kings!

.....sorry, got sidetracked there

Susan | 6406 comments I wouldn't trade it for the world but I did think staying at home would be a bit different than it is. I am getting better at it, though.
I sometimes think my Calligraphy looks really good and sometimes think it looks beginner-ish.

Awesome ambition, my friend! If it weren't for my paralyzing fear of public speaking...I'd have been a teacher.

You're afraid of public speaking?

Try standing only 5'5 and having a voice that's eerily similar to Tom Hulce's in Amadeus in front of a group of rowdy teenagers.... THEN talk to me about a fear of public speaking hehe ;)

Thank you for the vote of confidence though :)

And Susan....I LOVE that movie as well :D

message 9: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments Me too, me too!

::snorts pejoratively at description of height and voice::

I am (ahem) 5'2 with a voice like smurfette.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm 5'2", but I think my voice is pretty normal.

My fear is irrational, but it involves a lot of vomiting and anxiety. I teach little kids for Sunday School, I'm cool with wee'uns...as long as no adults want to sit in. I know it's stupid.

When I first went to England in 1990, our vicar made each of us girls (4) teach ladies class once. Just the once. I couldn't sleep or eat for the two days before, thought I was going to have a heart attack. I wouldn't let any of the other girls come. So silly, what were they going to do, Boo me?

I expect my fear is worse for lack of ever doing it. I think I could happily teach elementary school, but it would be getting through the college speech classes and student teaching that would kill me!

Susan | 6406 comments Yes, the more you do it the easier.

My huzzzzband says I am 5ft. max.

janine | 7709 comments I work at a callcenter. When there are no calls I'm free to do whatever I want, as long as I'm still at my desk to answer any incoming calls. So for the maybe one or two minutes between calls I have time to go on Goodreads. So far this week there hasn't been any time between calls to go on Goodreads.

I own a dirigible repair shop, and I supplement my income weekends and evenings as a nuclear weapons inspector.

message 15: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) | 488 comments Oh, Lg. Now I'll be wondering whose jobs are real on this thread.

I'm a freelance costumer/technician/wardrobe person (jack of many related fields), primarily in theatre. Mostly off-Broadway. My schedule is pretty unpredictable since sometimes I work 80 hours per week and other times I'm out of work for a month, and I don't have a desk job where I can just go online. Typically I'm only on here before/after work (or on breaks on days when I'm working at home in my studio), or on my day off.

message 16: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments Ga! Why didn't I think to do that.
Block. Head.

They've pretty much given up using hydrogen, I understand.

message 30: by Jammies (new)

Jammies I am an administrative assistant for a family practice attorney (divorces, dissolutions, wills, guardianship, estates) and most of my work is done on the computer. As long as the bills are paid, the checkbooks balanced, the phone answered and the assorted "other duties as required" are completed, my employer has no problem with me surfing the 'net.

message 31: by evie (new)

evie (ecie) | 4437 comments I can play on the computer in my lunch break . I mostly post from home late at night . I don't work 9' til 5. I am in administration in a large international law firm .

Amy Neftzger (neftzger) | 304 comments Sometimes I like to tell people I'm an IRS auditor and watch them nervously try to remember everything that they've said to me up until that point in the conversation.

It's not as much fun on the Internet.

message 35: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24779 comments Mod
I got intensely bored at an office Christmas party once and started telling people I was an identical twin. Then when the entire focus of the conversation turned to me, as people were inexplicably fascinated by this for the next hour, I felt guilty.

message 36: by Chris (new)

Chris (bibliophile85) Not as funny, but once I was walking to the bus depot and I was dressed in a suit (was returning home from a friend's office Christmas party) and some random guy waiting there asked me if I wanted to buy some weed.

I looked at him and with a completely straight face said "You did not just ask me that did you?"

When his confused look said it all, I continued further by explaining "I'm a NARC"

He looked TERRIFIED! It was so funny...but in hindsight, rather stupid on my part. I could have wound up looking down the end of a gun barrel.

message 37: by evie (new)

evie (ecie) | 4437 comments I'm always busy on the night of the office Christmas party. It makes me anxious now, just to think about it.

message 40: by Félix (new)

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Grace is my nieces name. I was glad we were able to steer my sister away from the ghastly names she started out with.

I can't remember now. Some old lady names. I'm afraid to post what I think, what if someone here named their kid that?

message 45: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yeah we wouldn't want to offend anyone.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

Ruby was one and something like Mable?

message 47: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24779 comments Mod
I know someone who named their kid Ruby. I guess since the Ruby we had in this group is gone, I can say it....it makes me think of a waitress in a diner.

And then once that thought has flitted by, Jack Ruby.

message 48: by evie (new)

evie (ecie) | 4437 comments I like Ruby.

message 49: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) My grandmother's name was Ruby. And one of my father's sisters was a Mabel.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

You asked, don't bitch about it now, FELIX!

*Ponders going by her middle name*

Do y'all like your middle names? My brothers got some doozies! Edwin and Ferguson. Uncle Clifford always went by his shortened middle name, Ed.
