Heroes of Olympus isn't told in 3rd person.... There's is no 'other person' telling the story. It's switches between different first person points of view....? Which is my favorite type of book. You get to connect deeper with all of the characters. Like an alternating first person.

I like alternating 1st person, too. I think I like 1st person better. You just get to know the character(s) better. but it DOES depend on the book, like some books are told better in 3rd person, others in 1st person.. ETc.

@Nikki I'm pretty sure that The Heroes of Olympus books are actually in third person. They just alternate between narrators.

Both have their merits. !st person is easier to connect with the character, and alternating 1st person can give you multiple MC's. But if you have a LOT of MC's or tons of supporting characters that you want to be able to focus on, 3rd person is better. 3rd person can get more descriptive, and is very good in some places. But in some books, 3rd person totally disconnects you from the MC and makes the book a flop (ex: Dark Visions by LJ Smith). But, there are cases in which I don't like 1st person, mainly when the book is told in the form of a journal (ex: Beka Cooper trilogy by Tamora Pierce, Darker Still by Leanna Renee Hieber)
In short, there are good and bad qualities to each.
But, to clarify and answer the question, i prefer 1st person.

But the person telling the story has a limited view of the big picture based on what they know, and their own personal thoughts. They don't know what anyone else is thinking, and that's first person, right?

Yeah, I think it's more alternating third person point of view.

It can? But isn't the whole point of third person to have dramatic irony, where the reader knows more than the characters?

Not necessarily. That is one of the uses of third person, but some people just write in third person because it's easier for them and not because they want to reader to know more than the characters.

I agree. I think the Heroes of Olympus isn't really a dramtic irony third person POV but more just a alternating third person POV. You do get a little in the characters mind but it doesn't say things like 'I', 'Me', or 'My'.
i like first person wayy better!! but i like it when one chapter is one characters pov and the 2nd is another characters point of veiw, and so on...

I tend to lean towards first person because I feel like it's a bit easier to get into a characters mind that way. But if done right, third person can be good too. For example, The Heroes of Olympus series is in third person but I love those.
