Does Anyone Like Piper?
Cara Cara (last edited Jan 16, 2013 08:09PM ) Jan 12, 2013 02:05PM
Okay, so in Mark of Athena I really didn't like Piper because of all of her whining, and neither has anyone else that I know who's read the book. So, if you liked her, please explain why, and if you didn't like her, feel free to rant.

I don't love her after reading MoA, but I did like her in TLH. I still do like her, just not as much. I think she is actually a very realistic character, she has a lot of the worries that are very common and she does appear shallow, and that is what makes her realistic. I also like that she's not shallow in the way the rest of her cabin is, because it makes it more interesting. She also has a better perspective/grip on what Aphrodite is actually about than the rest of her cabin (TLH). Despite what people think she is brave. If you re-read TLH, she does many, many brave acts there, and she is also willing to leave her dad to save Hera/Juno, but the boys don't let her. She brings things to the seven that none of the others can. Yeah, she's whinny sometimes and does appear shallow, but she does care about her friends, not just Jason, and her intentions are good.

I love Piper. She is clever and powerful and kinda bad-ass, even tho she loves Jason.
I think she's just hated because you know, she's not Annabeth, and because she likes Jason, who is not Percy.

I mean, she is different from Annabeth, but I really like her.
Although, I used to hate her, because she was pretty annoying, but I've changed my mind now and really like her and Jason as a couple. It's so cute how he always thinks she's beautiful even tho she's trying hard to make her appearance, like, not so noticeable.
I know fans freaked when she said that Percy looked "unimpressive", and I have to admit, I did too. But then I realized that Rick Riordan made her think this to show readers how different the demigods are. Like, she obviously prefers Jason over Percy, but Annabeth so obviously prefers Percy over Jason. And when Leo said he didn't find Annabeth attractive, nobody paid any attention to that, but just had a go at Piper.
And another thing there's been a lot of attention around, is when she told Drew to "back of off Jason" because he was "hers" but honestly I don't think she meant like "go to hell, bitch, he's my guy and omg don't even look at him!" I think she meant like "back off, he's had a rough couple of days and doesn't need you swarming around him. if he needs comfort, i'd be the one he'd need, because i've spent these awful last days with him fighting monsters and stuff and we've been through a lot together."
So yeah, I like her! But of course, totally respect you guys that don't prefer her over the others. I just don't think that, you know, she deserves all the hate :)

Yeah sorry guys I don't see what your problem is. Piper is a really good addition to the Heroes of Olympus series. I mean, she is a daughter of Aphrodite, so obviously her strengths aren't as much in the fighting which could make her look wimpy or something...but if you think about it, she actually makes being a child of Aphrodite cool!

I think, like Leo's worries about being the 7th wheel, and Frank and Hazel's obvious concerns about their relationship, Piper has some pretty realistic claims to be a bit worried. Even about her relationship with Jason, which, I believe is the major concern for many of you here. May I remind you that Percy also had worries about his relationship with Annabeth in MOA, saying it was like something precious and fragile and he didn't want to break it. And these two have known each other for years, as opposed to Piper and Jason who have known each other for about six months. Now tell me that Piper, after knowing Jason for that length of time, is able to go off on a quest straight after seeing a girl who could possibly have ended up as Jason's girlfriend, and know exactly what the guy was thinking. I dunno about you, but I'd be a little worried. And I personally think Rick's setting it up for Piper and Jason to sort out all their worries in book quatro.

But seriously peeps, stop bagging out Piper. She's a good mediator, she's intelligent, (and between you and me...Annabeth likes her. they are friends with each other. You know, Annabeth, that girl that everyone thinks is awesome and trusts her judgement about everything...that girl).

So, yeah Piper's cool. All that worrying about Jason...CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!

There's my rant. Now I'm not saying Piper's my favourite character, but that doesn't mean she sucks. Or is shallow. etc... Just doing a bit of defending here coz Piper is actually a pretty smart idea for another female character. If you think about it, we've got Annabeth...smart cookie. We got Hazel... awesome fighting skills, actually the only girl with proper fighting powers, and Piper. What I'm trying to say is can you think of another third girl that would contrast the other two so well? They all complement one another, like brains, politics and power, I quite like it.

Sorry, went on a bit longer than I planned.
Anyhoo, there it is.

Alrighty, one last thing. Since when is worrying about images she sees in a dagger depicting her, Percy and Jason drowning...whining? Or wishing that Jason wasn't quite so hard to read...whining? Or being annoyed that Jason asked her to talk to Reyna...whining? Or- you get the picture. Just putting it out there.

Signing off now. I promise (ish).

Yes. I used to dislike her but after reading the Mark of Athena and re-reading The Lost Hero I began to like her. She is well-developed and I particularly like how she doesn't want to be a stereotypical Aphrodite girl. She is one of my favorite characters and I don't appreciate people being horrible to her.

Catherine @Shahdia: I like what you're saying about her not wanting to be a stereotypical Aphrodite girl. That's true. However, I also think she's there to purp ...more

I like her . she is pretty yet soo humble . she just have this jealous feeling when it comes to Jason . But really, most girls are like that when it comes to love . i mean, i think that's pretty normal, it's girl's nature.

That's interesting many of my friends like Piper. I have nothing agenst her, but she isn't my favorite character either. I want to know why people don't like her. I just don't get it. Sorry.

I honestly feel like nobody really actually likes her..and I feel sort of bad about it. But then I don't, because I remind myself that I don't like her either..(;

i not a fan of her and i find it weird how she fell in love with jason when part of it was the mist so it makes it hard for me to like their love story

Yeah the character sucks ruin the last book for me. I felt instead of being whiny i would had like to see her written with some arrogance to her personality

No, she wines a lot and shes just an unnecessary, annoying character.

piper is okay.i mean she does whine a lot but she's an okay fighter and i like her " i'm not a bitch like drew" attitude

I used to dislike her very much before I read MoA, but now she's alright. She does whine a lot, but I try to get over it. I have mixed feelings. Mostly, I have disliking feelings.

i like her very much.. she must be look like daugther of Jennifer Lopez....she is smart too.

I kinda like her, she's just not my favourite character.

I really like Piper although I agree with you that she wasn't that great in Mark of Athena. I like her more than I like Hazel and I think that her powers are a lot cooler to.

I have nothing against Piper, personally. Other than Percy and Annabeth, she is my second favourite of the seven, because I can relate more to her than I can to Frank and Hazel. If you think about her lifestyle ... her father being busy with his job, that nasty receptionist ... no good at school ... and then when we finally meet her in The Lost Hero, she's given a bunch of fake memories and has this guy plonked down next to her who she remembers about but he doesn't ... and then she discovers she's the daughter of Aphrodite!

If you take all that into mind ... she's a pretty. cool. kid.

I don't hate her and I think she does help a lot she just.... I don't know I just don't really like her very much. I see her purpose I'm just not a fan of her personality.

I understand her, just i can't relate.

I like her in the way she doesn't want to be like drew in the snotty, "pretty" girl way. She tries to hide most of her beauty, instead of showing it off trying to get everything she wants.

Well, why won't you like her in the first place?

My earlier post wasn't that clear so I decided to edit it.

I dislike Piper because she's a Sue.

Piper is a hypocrite. In LH, She insults her siblings for drooling over Jason, but she herself does it during the quest. She also gives a speech about love and acceptance and acts mean towards Drew in the end of the speech. Sure, Drew was an ass, but her treatment by Piper's hands showed that Piper was no better than Drew.

She's also pretty selfish. The only person that she "cares" about is Jason and even then, it seems that she's treating him more like a possession rather than a person. She actually wants to believe that he loves her despite the fact that Aphrodite and Hera are influencing his thoughts. Not to mention that she pays little attention to Leo despite the fact that both of them were originally friends.

Okay, so some of you are pointing out that Mary Sues have no flaws and probably thinking I'm a troll (can't really blame you guys for that since I act this way sometimes to my friends).

You guys are missing the point of a Mary Sue. This following quote can sum up what a Mary Sue is.

"The Mary-Sue is not judged by if the readers can see her flaws, she is judged by if the characters can see her flaws."

So when it means that Mary Sue is perfect, it means that the character has to be viewed as "perfect" by the other characters since no one is seeing her flaws. Bella Swan is a Sue because although she's a brat, every boy loves her.

It's funny that Jason is wrongfully accused of being a Gary Stu in MoA since Annabeth actually calls him out for being a jerk to Reyna. Piper, on the other hand, pretty much gets away from such criticism.

If House of Hades/Unnamed Fifth Book actually has a character telling off Piper for her flaws, Piper would no longer be considered a Sue and hopefully, she would no longer be hated by the readers, save the rabid Jeyna fans.

And also, Mr. Riordan, although I like his PJO and KC series, is not perfect. He's like every other human on this planet; he makes mistakes.

Catherine Except that the other characters DO recognize her flaws in the story. She's jealous, she's dismissive of things she considers frivolous, and even both ...more

I honestly don't understand why a lot of people dislike Piper. For those of you who can't relate to Piper or something like that, 'kay, we're cool. But to all of you who are saying she is not a well written character or is a "Mary Sue", we've got problems. For all you complaining about her faults and then calling her a Mary Sue, you're basically contradicting yourself because a Mary Sue is a character who is classified as unrealistic, perfect, or without faults, which some of you just listed off. And the day when Rick Riordan doesn't write a well developed character is...well, never. And for all of you saying she just spends the entire book whining, yeah no. She had plenty of butt-kicking scenes, which is pretty impressive when your only real weapons are your voice and a knife. And come on, she supposedly has a super hot boyfriend that she could only dream of having, and he could have been in love with someone else from his past. It's an awkward thing to bring up, expecially when you really want to focus on how to save the world. Jason makes his point to Piper that she's the girl he wants to be with, but she really had no idea what was going on in his head before that because Jason is a bit distant. Come on girls, imagine your favorite Hollywood actor you think is so hot falls in love with you, but he might have some feelings for someone else. You really wouldn't worry about it? I'm sorry, but if you say no I don't believe you.
Overall, I'm just sick of a lot of people bashing her character, trying to sound smart by using terms like a "Mary Sue" when they don't even know what it means. Basically Uncle Rick can do no wrong, and judging by the countless awards he's won and how long he's sat at #1 for many of his books on the bestseller lists, I don't think you should be telling him what to do or that he's done something wrong.

OMG! She is the worst! I can't stand her at all. Jason is wasting his time. Gods I hope the other six leave her somewhere. She is not great in battles and doesn't really help besides "charmspeak" people.
