21st Century Literature discussion

The book selected as the February 2013 Moderator's Pick is (drumroll please....):

Paperboy: A Dysfunctional Novel by Bob Thurber

Paperboy has fought a long and valiant war of attrition in this group's nomination threads, and the stars have finally aligned in its favour. Since this novel is published by a small independent press, you may have great difficulty finding it at your local bookstore or library. It is, however, readily available as a Kindle e-book, and most large online retailers should have copies for sale. If anyone finds a solution that is cheaper or more convenient, please feel free to share it in this thread.

I don't think it was Victory by Attrition, but rather it is a book that cries to be read. It is a book both beautifully constructed and brave. This is a book that any reader who did not have a happy childhood will find a voice in (I'm adding this parenthetical aside to avoid ending this sentence in a preposition.)

One reason Paperboy was not chosen sooner was that there were complaints that it is not available at many libraries. This is true. Some may prefer not to invest in an unknown writer. That is understandable. The conversation next month will give you an opportunity to make an informed decision. There will also be a second book discussion for the open pic nomination winner and more books in March.

I think everyone should read Paperboy with us in February. It is a truly fine novel.
