Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Many people still struggle with the group and I often ask for suggestions for improvement. A recent thread on Amazon had a few people saying that they had given up but thought a few tweaks would help.

So help me here.... What tweaks would you like to see?

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments No use asking us - we're the ones who HAVEN'T given up!
I found it easy to get into. I lurked a few times on KuF but get totally be-mazed there.

Snap

Unless you can get rid of that girl.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I reckon that 'unread topics' button over there on the right is the best thing since sliced bread.

Once people find that, the rest is dead easy.

We just need to make sure they know about it.

message 5: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1774 comments I've never had any problems at all, compared to the epic bewilderment I experience whenever I stick my head round the corner of KUF or Kindleboards.

message 6: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Yea, I've never had any trouble on here (then again I have been here since there only was one thread), but I rarely go to the actual group homepage which I think could be quite confusing merely due to the amount of threads we have.

I agree with Patti though, the unread topics button is a dream come true

message 7: by Patti (baconater) (last edited Feb 05, 2013 06:38AM) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yeah, doesn't help that Simon never helps me with deleting threads and never puts them where they belong when he moves stuff around.

He also leaves his socks in the lounge.

Men.

indeed - my bookmark goes straight in at the unread topics i never visit the homepage at all!

imo, the only thing overwhelming about the group is also the best thing about it - and that it that it is very very active
so, you miss a day and there's loads of unread posts

which is where the "mark all as read" is very very handy too :)

message 9: by Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (last edited Feb 05, 2013 07:47AM) (new)

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I always come to the homepage as I like to see if there are any new threads.

I do clear the un-read ones off fairly regularly though.

I've never found it hard getting around...it can't be that hard if I can do it.

message 10: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I admit I don't use the group home page very often, because I tend to lose things!

Maybe we should change the order?

message 11: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I use the home page - but I rarely go down past half way (as the actress....)

Yes - I just wish they would stay "marked as read" though.
Say there is a thread about a book that I'm not interested in, and there are three unread messages. So I mark it as read, then someone else adds another messages & back it pops with 4 unread messages.
Not something that Simon can fix, I know it is Goodreads, but it does annoy me.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments O yes Janet that annoys me as well. I wish you could mark threads to permanently ignore.

message 14: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Many of the interesting (as opposed to "popular") threads need you to scroll way down, consequently they don't get looked at very much. *Every* thread really needs to be in the top half of the list, regardless of what laws of physics (or logic) you need to break to achieve that.

I once found a particular thread on KUF, but I never found it again.

message 15: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Haha! I love the idea of them all being in the top half.
Tim, I once heard someone say that girls did better educationally in an all-girls school and boys did better in a co-educational environment, therefore all girls should go to single-sex schools and all boys go mixed schools!

message 16: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments The girls school over the road was actually flagged as out of bounds. Which had roughly the same effect on us as banning a movie...

message 17: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments On most forums I visit I go straight to the "new posts today" type button, or "unread"

message 18: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments It would probably help if someone new came here... I wonder if they can find it?

message 19: by Patti (baconater) (last edited Feb 06, 2013 07:12PM) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Simon could link this thread in his first post in introduce yourself.

Get on it, Simon.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Gingerlily (or Cyberlily..) wrote: "O yes Janet that annoys me as well. I wish you could mark threads to permanently ignore."

Yes that too.

But the unread posts really annoys me. It's as if Goodreads is saying "But I know you haven't really read them so I'll just remind you about them." It's almost as annoying as getting junk mail every week from Mr Branson. (still haven't managed one week without at least one item of junk from his company)

message 21: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I've been here a bit, and didn't know about the 'unread' button.
But I've never had trouble finding anything, or posting.

Mago (Mark) | 1709 comments where am I?

message 23: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments You're all clearly a lot cleverer than I am, because I do have trouble finding my way around. For example, I'm sure I posted something about me in the 'Meet our Authors' thread - but I can't find it. Clicking on my name above a message takes me to a list of my posts - but only some of them are there.

message 24: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Found it for you. You need to click to the right where it says 9 of 299 or something. There's a list and it moves fast! It should show in the first 9 now.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments If you recall what you said in the post you're looking for, BJ, you could try putting the phrase in the search thingy over on the right and see if it appears.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

But BJ couldn't find and that is the point. Things aren't so easy to find. Perhaps I should empty the whole forum out and start again.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Only joking.

message 28: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You'd better be!

Now this is a typical example. Here is Kath attempting to be helpful by giving simple instructions, but I obviously suffer from some form of forum blindness that makes even the simplest guidance hard to follow. 'Click to the right' of what, Kath?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just delete me, Simon.

Think how much tidier the group would be without my posts.

message 31: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Of the Meet the authors section heading. Scroll down the home page till you find that. I've dug your thread out and dusted it off!

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Ignite wrote: "Of the Meet the authors section heading. Scroll down the home page till you find that. I've dug your thread out and dusted it off!"

Thank you! Found it - but only because you kindly bumped it up the list to make it obvious (even to me). How did you find it so quickly?

message 33: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Low cunning. That, and I've done it before. :)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments She's a clever lass!

message 35: by B J (new)

message 36: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm not sure she'll take too kindly to you rubbing her over yourself, but you never know.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ignite rubbing off on...

Think I better leave this thread now.

not having a go at anybody but surely authors should be subscribing to their own threads for email updates in case a reader pops in and asks a q or posts something?
then the thread would appear in their subscription list in their profile and would be easier to find...

or they could even bookmark it !

i think that you are taking on far too much responsibility Simon as there are things that readers/authors can do to make their lives easier here rather than it all being on you :)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh yeah.

There is that 'Email me when people comment' thing at the bottom of every thread.

I forget about that as I never use it.

Of course you're not having a go Kath. You'd never do that. :)

Very valid point though.

message 43: by B J (new)

B J Burton (bjburton) | 2680 comments Right, I've had a cold shower and ventured back. Good point about adding to 'Favourites', Kath. I've now done that. I was already set to receive emails if anyone posted on my author thread.
My poorly-expressed point was that if I couldn't find a thread that I knew existed (without the advantages of the links I have) how could anyone else find it.

message 44: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments We know where to look ;)

message 45: by Leslie (last edited Jun 22, 2016 06:57AM) (new)

Leslie Garland | 57 comments Well, I have to admit to being at least a little glad to find that I am not the only one who doesn't appear to know what is going on / what he is doing!
I joined goodreads.com a while back and already have an author page, etc., - all the bells and whistles - with them, and then just the other day found goodreads UK and so am investigating it today. Am I totally daft in thinking that goodreads.com and goodreads UK would be two seperate sites? OK , don't answer that one.
Well, I am gaining the impression that some parts are seperate and some parts aren't, but haven't yet ascertained which is which - this page, which is supposed to be for those who are struggling to sign on to goodreads UK, has I note a .com url!
So, am I an already signed in member of goodreads UK, or aren't I?
Help!

message 46: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments It's all Goodreads.com. This is a Goodreads .com forum for UK kindle readers. That's all!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Hi Leslie - yes you are a member of this forum, which is the UK Amazon Kindle Forum - which is one of the forums on Goodreads.com.

So to answer your question, no - they are not separate sites! :)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments But not just readers from the UK who use kindles.

Everyone is welcome in our group.

Pleased you found us Leslie!

Any more questions, please just ask.

Yes - I just wish they would stay "marked as read" though.

Ditto

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yeah, they reappear if a new comment is posted.

I rather like it that way. I save up looking at some threads until there's a few new posts.
