Reading The Book After Watching The Series

Hey all...

I am currently nearing the end of Season 3 on GoT (the red wedding has not happened yet!!), and I am really wanting to start in on the books.

Should I wait to catch up on the series before starting the books? Are the books even enjoyable knowing the "spoilers" from the TV show?

Thanks for your thoughts.

**Keep in mind, I am only midway through season 3. NO SPOILERS**

If you 're talking of the Red Wedding and you haven't seen it I guess you are aware that it's hard to avoid spoilers. I am currently re reading book 3 and the red wedding hasn't happened yet. :) If you enjoy the story and like the characters you have to read the books. The show is really amazing if you look at it as a TV show. One of the best I 've watched. But the characters have way more depth in the books and you can actually understand the reasons behind their actions. Also as the story becomes even more complex later and new plots are brought into the book the show runners can not keep up as airtime is limited. This means that a huge part of books is never mentioned in the show.
As much as I enjoy a good TV series, a good book is far more satisfying to me.

I tried to read the book while I was only new to the series, and because of that I found it way to confusing, I couldn't understand anything, and I had to read a page five times over to get a clear image in my head.

So I ditched the book and then watched the whole show, LOVE IT! And now I've just finished the first book. Now I find it more easy to read and understand, but that's just for me. For me, watching the show first was better.

And now I intend to finish the whole series before season 6, wish me luck!

And to answer your question, I found the book enjoyable even after watch the show. It just depends on whether you care about spoilers and book/tv show differences.

Honestly, by the time you get to season 4 the tv series has really started to move away from books. I did the opposite to what you are (I read the books first so at first I knew how everything was going to pan out) but it's getting to the point where I can't predict what's going to happen next on the show because they're kind of becoming a new story in their own right rather than strictly following the books.
I'd say go for though if you want to read the books. It's a different kind of experience really and I don't think one cancels out the other. And hey, you can always just stop reading them if you find you're not enjoying them.

Definitely read the books. There's so much more to them than is shown on the TV show. A number of characters, plotlines, and a HUGE amount of backstory and worldbuilding from the books are not present in the show.

I watched the first two seasons, then read all the books. I enjoyed the first two books even though I mostly knew what was coming (though there are enough book-to-TV differences even in the first two seasons, which are mostly faithfully adapted). And as Anna says, by season 4, the books and the show diverge so much that they're mostly separate entities with just a few points in common.

Hmmm, I'm a little on the fence here. While I think the books deserved to be read more than the show watched, it will be hard to get into once the show has delivered all those troublesome spoilers. I for one find it hard to enjoy a book after seeing the adaptation first. But I would still recommend you read the full series to get a sense of what it was like originally.

hi I started reading the books after watching the show and its great experience because I know all the families and places so I won't be confused and also I can't have enough of it so now i get to experience it more details.

George RR Martin Is a great MAN God Bliss Him

I haven't read the books but have watched the series; which I really enjoy. But I do still want to read the books because books tend to have so much detail in them.

I wouldn't bother.

If he ever finishes the book series (which is seriously in question, considering how slow he is as a writer, his convention schedule which prevents him from writing -- he can only write at home, and his obesity and general state of health) it might be worth picking up.

Until then.. if you enjoy the show, just watch it and take it as it is.
