Tiffany Here is David's initial post:

Every year outstanding achievements in horror fiction is recognized at the Bram Stoker Awards. I think it would be a great idea to read all the nominees before the award ceremony. (June 13 -16)and of course discussing which book we felt should have won! Here are the Nominees:

Bodner, Hal - The Trouble with Hairy (Phantom Hollow Publishing)
Clines, Peter - 14 (Permuted Press)
Ethridge, Benjamin Kane - Bottled Abyss (Redrum Horror)
Everson, John - NightWhere (Samhain Publishing)
Faherty, JG - Cemetery Club (JournalStone)
Jordan, Lee F. - Coronation (Black Rose Writing)
Kiernan, Caitlin R. - The Drowning Girl (Roc)
Little, Bentley - The Haunted (Signet)
McKinney, Joe - Inheritance (Evil Jester Press)

My initial comment:

I don't think that this is the right folder for this post, but I'd be interested in reading all of these. However, this is just the preliminary ballot, so they aren't actually officially nominated yet. But, whenever they narrow it down to the five actual nominees, I plan on reading those.

Tiffany can I move this post to the right folder? Help! :)

good point I can delete this and wait until the official 5 are listed....

message 4: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany No, but don't worry about it. I'm sure a mod will come by soon and move it to the right folder :) By the way, the official Stoker ballot will be announced on February 23rd.

message 5: by John (new)

John McNee Can you repost the list? Might take me all year to get through it, but it seems like a fun challenge.

And someone needs to be able to smugly champion the books that were left off the shortlist, so that when the awards are finally announced and everyone's rooting for their favourite I can be all: "Yeah, well, sure you WOULD think that deserves it, but only cos your never read THIS..." etc.

message 6: by David (new)

David Church (splatterpunk88) | 20 comments I was trying to move the post and deleted the body of the topic...and now it won't let me repaste what I typed...hopefully Teressa can help ;)

David Church (splatterpunk88) | 20 comments Here was the initial post, if I can figure out how to get it back into the body of the topic :/

McKinney, Joe - Inheritance (Evil Jester Press)

I have just finished Cemetery Club, and now I am starting 14! (of course I will probably sprinkle in some other reads in-between). Let me know what you guys think.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Hi, David. Just got in and saw this message. I'd be happy to move this thread to the Reading Challenges folder. We encourage thread starting so don't ever be afraid of posting it in the wrong place. It's no big deal if something has to be moved, and most times threads don't.

Once your initial post was deleted, it can't be moved back to the top. If Tiffany wouldn't mind cutting/pasting your message with the list in her thread, that should solve the problem. Or, would you rather start a new thread? I may be a little confused about what's being asked of me.

message 10: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Not a problem, Tressa. I edited my first post.

I'm really excited for February 29th. I can't wait to see who makes the final cut!

message 11: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Thank you, Tiffany. I always plan to read the BS picks/winners but get sidetracked by my TBR list. Maybe this thread will help.

Thanks Tressa & Tiffany! Feel free to move it to the appropriate folder!

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments OK. I've moved it to the Lists & Reading Challenges folder.

message 14: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments This actually helped me! It gave me seven more publishing companies to look up for my 2nd book and they are horror so I know that's at least covered!

That is awesome! I wish I had time to read every category, going to try to make it through Novel of the year and first novel..

message 18: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments I looked into them and it didn't help. Phantom Hollow Publishing doesn't exist or I can't find it and the rest are all closed to submissions.. :( Talk about a total let down!

Justin, If you're shopping a horror novel, you should submit it to JournalStone's $2000 Advance in 2013 contest. I won last year and Brett J. Talley won in 2011. They've been really good to us. The contest is open to submissions until April 1st.

I noticed your first book is poetry. If it's another poetry collection, you might check out the publishers in the Poetry category of the Stoker Reading List that I linked to above. Best of luck!

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments We should have a poll before they announce the winner just to compare our picks with the winners.

message 25: by David (new)

David Church (splatterpunk88) | 20 comments Good idea...can we create polls in goodreads? I am somewhat new here? :/

message 26: by 11811 (Eleven) (new)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments I never have but yes you can. Top right - click polls, then again on top right - click 'create a poll.'. I'm assuming that's all there is to it but I could be wrong.

message 27: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany That's a fun idea :) This year's ceremony is June 16th I think, so maybe we could start the poll June 1st. That would give us time to read quite a few nominees and over two weeks to vote before the actual winners are mentioned.

message 28: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Sounds like a fun idea. HA members: Rfeel free to create polls, add books to HA bookshelves, and post photos and videos.

message 29: by John (new)

John McNee I'm reading Joe McKinney's Inheritance right now. Be lucky if I finish just that before June 16th.

message 30: by 11811 (Eleven) (new)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments For those participating in the challenge, which books do you plan to read? I'm shooting for the main five unless someone recommends something from the First Novel category.

Ethridge, Benjamin Kane – Bottled Abyss (Redrum Horror)
Everson, John – NightWhere (Samhain Publishing)
Kiernan, Caitlin R. – The Drowning Girl (Roc)
Little, Bentley – The Haunted (Signet)
McKinney, Joe – Inheritance (Evil Jester Press)

Char | 17463 comments Hey, everyone! Inheritance is free at Amazon today. My group is going to read it next week.

message 32: by 11811 (Eleven) (new)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments Thanks Char, I'll probably make that next on my list.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm aiming for 3 or 4,

1. The Bottled Abyss
2. The Haunted
3. The Drowning Girl
4. Inheritance

Last got thrown in for being a free book. :)

message 34: by 11811 (Eleven) (new)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments I already read The Haunted and its gonna be a tough one to beat. I hope you get the opportunity to squeeze that one in.

message 35: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I'm almost finished with The Haunted and do not like it.

Is there an emote for shock, sadness, and denial? I really thought you would like this one. :'(

message 37: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Eleven, I'm sorry it had to come to this. We must part ways on this book. Perhaps if this was his first, I would love it as much as you did. But it's not and I know he's got it in him to write more compelling horror.

I think Little has been a tad overrated for a long time.

message 39: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I still like and appreciate his books.

message 40: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany I plan on reading the five novel nominees and two of the poetry collections. I haven't heard much about the nominees for debut novel or YA novel, so I probably won't delve into them unless someone here mentions one that is fantastic.

message 41: by 11811 (Eleven) (new)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments It's all good. I thought The Cannibal Within was a 3-4 star book but I rounded up to four because I was afraid Tressa would have me banned from the group and possibly lynched.

And yes, Jon, he is overrated. The Haunting was my favorite and I enjoyed The Store but the couple others I've read were disappointing. The only reason I picked up The Haunted was because of Jason's 5 star review and I had to read it to believe it.

Lynched. That's killing two birds with one stone. I'm frugal with my time, what can I say. Do not EVER change a rating because you're afraid I'm going to bury you in my backyard.

I'm going to try to read one from each nominated category.

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

Heh. I just saw that I'm planning to read 4 out of the 5 novel nominations - I wouldn't want a book to feel left out - yeah, I'm going to read all 5 too. :)

I'll be participating in the challenge (i'm new on goodreads, so this one is my first) and try to read 4 or 5 novels.
