Krazykiwi | 152 comments Gather round What's the Namers, I have a backwards mystery for you.

So I was digging around in a box and found an old home burnt CD labelled "Books", dating from around ten years ago. I've id'ed most of them but this one is a bit of a mystery.

So this is an old PRC file, with no cover art, but it has a copyright page, a title page, and then the content (which I haven't read yet, but I'm going to some time this week).

The exact text on the title page is:
Mother Damnation [The Blessed and the Damned I]

Which I interpreted to mean the book is called Mother Damnation, and the series The Blessed and the Damned, but looking around at the very few reviews I could find of it, it seems to be the other way around, so I entered it that way.

The publisher is defunct (erenbooks.com) and was an e-book only publisher in the early days of that, and this book apparently came from Fictionwise (also defunct). The ISBN on the title page is bogus and invalid, go figure.

The author is deceased, and her website is now removed so I can't get at it from there, although a couple of externally hosted blogs did give some clues. She refers to it once as the manuscript "Mother Damnation: The Blessed and the Damned" being turned in to her editor in 2006, which is the date on the book I have. There's another time around 2010, when she was busy republishing all her backlist via a different publisher, after Renaissance went belly up--in that post, she says she's found a new collaborator to work with, and was rewriting "Mother Damnation", but the wording is unclear if it's this specific book, or the series it was going to spawn.

Oddly enough, I actually found fan fiction for this too! Janrae Frank was an interesting author, and has a bit of a cult following within some dark fantasy circles, but wow, that was a surprise.

So, it has no valid ISBN, no cover art, and I can't find a description of it on the web for love nor money to fix up it's GR listing. And I'm not even exactly sure what it's actually called!

So since this is my go-to for crazy weird books haunting my dreams, I figure, if anyone out there has run across this book and knows any more info about it, I'm all ears. Worst case, after I've had time to read it, I can write a description myself, but I'd dearly love to give it some cover art get it's name right.

The Blessed and the Damned
Written with Phil Smith.
Renaissance Ebooks, 2006.

The Godwar has begun. Bellocar the Hellgod has destroyed the continent of Yurpa, and he and his wives have slain all the Gods of Light. Only Ishla the Tinkerer survives, and try though she might all she can do is hope for help that may never come. In the midst of all this, only Louistrana remains free; besieged on all sides by the forces of Mother Damnation. Only the brilliant but arrogant Major Dane Jayce and his company stand between Louistrana and utter annihilation. It's the last great war: can the Louistranan guns withstand Mother Damnation's fell magic, or will they run out of ammo? These battles will shape the world to come. Find out how the world of the Sacred King Quartet and the Dark Brothers saga came to be. Janrae Frank is the author of ten Fictionwise.com bestsellers in a row including the celebrated Journey of the Sacred King Quartet.

Guns vs Demons in a Dark Fantasy World of Technology and Witchcraft! Mother Damnation begins the story of the final year of the nation of Louistrana's fight against the Hellgods. Louistrana is the last free nation that has not fallen to the forces of darkness, led by the Dark Goddess known as Mother Damnation. Only one of God of Llight survives, Ishla, and she has sent out a call for divine help, but it can not be answered until winter's solstice when the World Ggates can be opened. It falls to Major Dane Truman Jayce, Captain Aristotle Sinclair, and their infantry to grab their arsenal of rifles, bazookas, cannon and hold off the enemy's advance. Thus begins an epic battle of science versus sorcery along the swamps and banks of a tremendous river. Major Jayce is famous in Louistrana for his unorthodox methods and questionable ways of doing things. Before The Blessed and the Damned saga is over some readers will think he's a hero and some readers will think he's an asshole, and some will think he's both. Janrae Frank is the author of ten Fictionwise.com bestsellers in a row including the celebrated Journey of the Sacred King Quartet.

Krazykiwi | 152 comments Oops, I had notifications off on this thread. You are a genius, and your google-fu is definitely stronger than mine :)

That's more than enough to fix up it's GR entry with, so thanks mightily!

Raz | 87 comments Glad I could help.

I googled, found her old website address and then just used the way back machine internet archive to browse to an old version of it. http://archive.org/web/ You can type in any internet address there and frequently they'll have archived copies of older versions. It's useful for cases like this when none of the websites are working anymore.

So now you can have my google fu too. :)
