I recall a short story (MANY years ago) about robots living in their own society in a world where humans have become extinct (how or why was never made clear). The robots embark on a research project to re-create humans through bioengineering, and finally succeed. At that point, something in their primal programming kicks in, and they become subservient to the human they have just created.

That sounds something like what you are talking about... but unfortunately I can't remember the title or the author either. Have searched through a lot of short-story anthologies in my library, but can't find it.

Gee. I wanna read both stories!
