First person question...

This isn't necessarily only about Love Unscripted BUT it came about when I read the blurb for that book. The book sounds awesome, although I haven't read it.

My question is how come all of these YA or Mature YA are all being written in first person? Why can't the author (s) write something in 3rd person with the same great synopsis and plot?

I'm just sick of reading first person. I think the only one I will buy from now on are authors I know (and have loved reading their books) or ones that really interest me.

What do you all think of this?

Thanks
Trish F Leger

If done well, first person narrative is compelling and helps the reader be transported into the story. Unfortunately, not many people do it well.

Personally, I enjoy a mixture of first person and third person. When I only get one perspective, I feel like I'm missing most of the action. After all, one person can only see one thing at a time. I want the whole story!

I'm a bit of a glutton, that way. :-)

I really struggle with books written in the 3rd person as I feel it takes some of the depth of emotion away, I agree its great to see it from all perspectives but it takes a really good author to be able to write in the 3rd person and not loose the depth for me.

Nikki I totally agree. I think that first person is the best and not necessarily easy to write in. I feel like a little "mystery" by only telling one person's side is what makes some books so successful. Think about 50 shades- Like Paula said- "wouldn't it be fun to know what Christian was thinking" If EL James had put Christians POV in the books too, you wouldn't be left wondering and pining for his thoughts. You wouldn't have to sit back and go; HMMM, I wonder what is going on in his head. It keeps the reader guessing and thinking about the book even after they have finished it. The most successful books are the ones that people just can't get out of their heads.

Great question Trish!!

My issue is not that the story was written in the first person but that the story contained WAY too many details to the story. Most of the details served absolutely no purpose to the story. If you read it, you know why. In the first book (Love Unscripted) it just keeps going on and on and on and on about a whole lot of information...all you need to know is the important stuff...not EVERY FRICKIN' RED CARPET THEY GO ON! And the second book picks up where that leaves off and the story just goes on and on and on with more insignificant details.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the story. I liked the characters. I even laughed and found myself thinking about these characters and their messed up world/life...but it was too full of insignificant details that only got you to realize that they were human...only to realize that they're not humans...they're fictional characters in a book!

I did give this book five stars...but it was only because I thought the potential for an amazing story was there...I just didn't think that the author did a fantastic job at delivering it as that.

Ariel Baird I totally agree- I kept looking at the page number going, really??? I like long books, but some of it, was kind of mundane... I enjoyed it, but I had ...more

Trish, I agree with you. I like to know what's going on with all the characters, especially with the main characters. Think how much fun it would have been if we knew what Christian was thinking about Ana at the same time we know her thoughts.
