Jamie Would anyone be interested in a book swap? Post a book that you have and want to share, and then post a book that you'd like to receive. The sender would pay for shipping (media mail isn't too much).

I have "A Walk Across the Sun" to share if anyone in the U.S. wants it- in like new condition.

Hmm, I have a stash of books to read, but if anyone has any of David Sedaris's books I'd love to read him again.

message 2: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Well, you could always post a book you have to share or a request and put a note that it's for U.K. only? Can't hurt to get your info out there. :)

Have you tried readitswapit website in the uk? Basically a book swapping site where you register what you want to shift and agree swaps if you want from other members spares. Your not obligated to accpet if you don't want to. each person bears the cost of sending their book to the other member,

I've used it a couple of hundred times,
Col

Giving unwanted books to charity is a good idea but could I ask you to consider another option? Last year I had to undergo radiotherapy for breast cancer. The hospital where I had my treatment had a trolley of books for sale at very low prices. I had forgotten to take a book with me (other things on my mind) and I was glad to be able to buy a book to read. Now I donate books to hospitals as well as charity shops.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Jenni - I haven't read enough Grisham to get tired of him yet, I'll swap ya,

What do you fancy? A dinosaur detective - Anonymous Rex / Casual Rex or Bobby Gold or Corned Beef Sandwichor At the City's Edge

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, if you can hang on a fortnight I'll have the Complaints as I'll be reading it before the end of the month,
I should have made it a bit clearer above, only the first one is a "rex" book, the others were just random titles I could recall reading recently, also have the Fifth witness by Michael Connelly,

If you don't fancy anything, no problem I won't be offended, Cheers Col

Please let us know what you think of The Complaints and its main character Malcolm Fox. I loved them and was really glad to see Rankin branch out.

I will do, I started recording what books I read from 2010 onwards, but when looking back through my reading list, was surprised by how little I could recall about so many of them.

I guess its partly an age thing, but also an indication of how a lot of books are ok in an average sort of way. The books that seemed to resonate the most - were those that I really disliked,

As much as an aide memoire to myself I started a blog recording my thoughts on what I'd read, so at least when I look back now, I can refresh my memory.

Sad to say I only ever read 1 Rebus - loads on Mount TBR though.

I live in Hampshire, England Jenni. I can only speak about my local hospitals but Frimley Park Hosp. in Surrey has a very small glass fronted room for books (opposite reception so someone can keep an eye on things), Fleet Hosp has bookshelves in Reception and St Lukes in Guildford where I had my treatment has the book trolley. I think the majority of people are honest especially as the proceeds of book sales go to the hospitals or patient groups.

Jenni wrote: "I'd like to reserve Complaints and will gladly wait for it. :^)"

No problem, I'll shuffle it a bit further forward on the TBR pile - so it will be next to read but one.

Patrick (patrickgallagher) | 24 comments Like Pats local hospital ours has a book trolley located in the little tea shop with the money raised going to the hospital league of friends who also have a shop in the town Ive bought books from that trolley many times over the years but when we have taken donations it has usually been to the shop never books though Ive never parted with a book in my life but its such a good cause I am going to steel myself and take some books for that trolley

Pat - I'm sorry you've had to go through that. I donate most of my old books either to the hospital or the battered women's shelter in my area. I even include the kids books for both. I had a friend that she and her mom ended up in a shelter for a while and she told me how hard it was with a communal TV and not many games or books. After hearing about it, that's where my books and games go. There's also a book swap they do at my mom's work so I've gotten some from there. At this point, my bookshelves are so full I have to give books away when I add to my collection. Not complaining but it's sometimes hard to pick.

I joined Paperback Swap this weekend! I have already requested two books, but sadly no one has requested one of mine yet. Oh, well! I will just have to add more of them I guess.

message 17: by Susan (new)

Susan Has anyone ever used Free Little Libraries? I have one here in Chandler Arizona that I am going to drop off a bunch of my books and see if there is anything in there I want to read! Here is the link. I'm not sure if they are worldwide.

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan I looked and only saw US and Europe!

message 19: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I don't have my own place so I can't start a little free library and there are none in my area. So frustrating!

Apologies for the lateness of the reply, I missed this post! Sorry - yeah really enjoyable. If I knew how to link to my review I would, but if not too great at posting links.

message 24: by Joan (new)

Joan Col: I, too, loved The Complaints. I read your review. Interesting that you weren't crazy about Breck; I really liked him! Anyway, The Impossible Dead is actually better than The Complaints; so I'm hoping that Rankin has a long, good run with this cast of characters. On a less optimistic note, I just read the return of Rebus (Standing in Another Man's Grave), and a must sourer, less appealing Malcolm Fox appears in that one, too. I hope the sour side of Fox doesn't take over the series in which he's the main character.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Joan,
I will move TID closer to the top of the pile of unreads, especially as you say it's better.
If I start on Rebus I'll probably aim for the begining of the series first. so it will take a while to get to his latest. I'm reading a few series at the minute, but I'm rationing myself to 1 a month - so I'll get back to you in about 2 years time!

Joan Jenni wrote: "... I will never buy an ereader because I can always get print books I can really own cheaper. "

Never say never, Jenni. As time goes on, there may be fewer and fewer print books available; the people who bought them new (from whom you bought them used) may switch to ebooks.

But the real clincher is travel. You can board a train or a plane with dozens, even hundreds of books on a small device. It's impossible to take a long trip with such a big cache of print books.

(And for those of us who are getting on in years, there's the marvelous ability to enlarge the font at any time when using an ereader!)

message 28: by Joan (new)

Joan Jenni wrote: "I don't want to read hundreds of books while travelling; I can only manage one or two because the rest of the time I enjoy the placed I am travelling."

Ideally, yes. But someday you will be stuck on a runway or in an airport lounge for hours, and, when you are, you'll be happy to be able to start the next book when you finish the one that you thought would last you the whole trip.

Mike | 19 comments One thing to try is something the school I work at has set up. Books you no longer want are put on a shelf in the staffroom and if any other member of staff wants it they can have it as long as they put a donation into the charity box next to the books.

we raise about £30-45 each term doing this and unwanted books get a new home.

message 35: by Taylor (new)

Taylor One of the groups I belong to here on GR has a book swap/ giveaway. Members post the titles of books they would like to have, want to give away, or swap. The cost of shipping is often the same price as the cost of the book, nevertheless it's quite popular.

message 36: by Samhazy (new)

Samhazy | 43 comments That, for me, is the biggest disadvantage of e-books. I used to love swapping books with my sister and aunts but I can't with e-books. I also used to love attending the charity fairs and spending hours at the book stalls. Books were ridiculously cheap (a dollar a piece or something) and I found new authors that way too. If I purchase something and am finished with it, I should be able to give it away.
