Graeme Smith (graeme_smith) | 1 comments ... me :-).
This is probably in the wrong place. Heck, I wondered and I wondered, I did, about posting it at all. Especially after I realised I had no idea where to post it. Or rather, that wherever I posted it would probably be wrong. But...
Is it just me? (Blush)
Let me start with a little background. Once upon a time (I know, a lot of stories start that way, but it really was only once, as far as I don't recall), I was born :-). And I was born in W Germany. But I was only born in W Germany because my father was in the Royal Air Force. So we were only there six months, and I don't remember much. Er - anything :-). I then spent the next mumblety-mumble years growing up in the UK. In England, to be precise.
And then I emigrated. To Canada. To give you an idea what that means, let me tell you a joke people tell about Canadians:
'Question: What does a Canadian say when you step on their foot?
Answer: Sorry.'
Heh. That's only a joke when non-Canadians tell it. If you tell it to a Canadian, they just look puzzled. And probably apologise.
Um, I fitted right in. Sorry :-).
Hang on. I had a point here somewhere. Oh. Right. there it is...
Listopia. Is it just me? (Blush)
No, don't get me wrong. I think Listopia is definitely a Good Thing(tm). But - is it me? You see, there are lots of, um, lists on Listopia. And a lot of them - well, they have Titles. OK - they all have titles. But some of them have, um, Titles :-). Titles like 'Best Books Ever about Artichokes'.
OK. So there isn't really a List called Best Ever Books about Artichokes. I made that up :-).
But there are a lot of 'Best...' lists. And that's the thing. And, like I said, maybe it's just me. But I always cringe a little inside when I think about adding a book title, and no I don't just mean my own 'books wot I wrote', I mean any books, to a list called 'Best'. And why?
Because I feel all - well, guilty isn't the right word. Even arrogant is wrong, because it's a lot squishier than that :-). Maybe I just feel not-Canadian, or not-English, trying to tell anyone reading the list how I think something I liked is the 'Best' any damn thing, just because I, um, liked it.
Yes. I know. I'm an Idiot :-).
But there it is. 'Best (insert thing of choice here) Ever'. Is it me? (Blush) :-).
Thoughts? Comments?
