Hello all,

I was wondering, should I read this one before Anne of Ingleside? I know Windy Poplars is next chronologically in Anne's life, but wsan't Ingelside written next after Anne of the Island? Does it matter? Thanks!

Anne of Ingelside doesn't connect much with the rest of the series, it happens a lot later, so it doesn't really matter. I'd read them in order, though, but if you want to you can read Ingleside first.

I just figured Montgomery would have written them in the order she wanted them read, so I would wait on Windy Poplars...

Yeah, that works. I love her books, by the way. The later ones hardly ever get talked about.

Cassondra I read them in order. "Anne of Ingleside" was actually written last...even after "Rilla of Ingleside" (you can tell from foreshadowing, but it's also evident by publication date). I would go with the chronological order of Anne's life, making "Windy Poplars" the fourth book and then "House of Dreams" then "Anne of Ingleside" then "Rainbow Valley" and lastly, "Rilla of Ingleside."

I know it's sad the later ones hardly get talked about. "Rilla of Ingleside" is so sweet and so sad. And the last chapter in "Rainbow Valley" when Walter says, "Let the piper come," chokes me up! Especially after I read "Rilla" again. :)

GSGS I agree - read them in order of Anne's life. Quite honestly, you could skip Windy Poplars, but read it anyway.

Oh, that book's one of the only ones that's made me cry ;(

Serena Anne of Windy Poplars first.

Beth Hold up, skip Windy Poplars??? No! Haha. It does have a different feel because of it being mostly letters, but there are some gems in there that are not to be missed.

Anne of the Island is still my ultimate favorite, and I'll never quite get over the fact that the movies both ignored much of the plot of that one AND then made that awful third movie in later years. To anyone who has not seen the movies, please do yourself a giant favor if you decide to see them, and never watch a moment of the third installment.

Susan I read them in the order of Anne's life. Rainbow Valley was my least favorite, but I've read it a couple of times anyway.

I love the letters in Windy Poplars and I wish people still wrote letters like those.

message 10: by GSGS (new) - rated it 4 stars

GSGS *shrugs* I'm not suggesting skipping it, I'm just saying you COULD skip it, and everything would still make sense.
And although I adored them all, Windy Poplars was my least favourite.

Anne of the Island is still ..."

I agree. That third movie was HORRIBLE. I don't know what they were thinking in completely changing the story. It was a HUGE disappointment.

Maggi i really didnt like the 4th book. I skipped like half of it.

Elizabeth Isaac most definately go with the order of Anne's life or you will find it confusing. it would mean she was married with kids and then only engaged again. not a good way of reading i think.

Maggi ya i never really thought of anne as a slut. lol jk

Bethany I really think it makes a world of difference to read them all in order. It really helps you understand and enjoy the series better. However you can do whatever you feel is best, but personally I liked it better in order. :)

I think Anne of Windy Poplars should be read first. Good book, but the fact that some of my fav characters weren't a part of the book was kind of a turn-off. Trust me, AOI is much cheerier because of all the side stories, even though Anne is no longer such a strong part of the book. But Poplars still prepares you for what is to come next, and all the darkness of the book kind of made me stronger for what was to come later on....

Anne really experiences lots of ups and downs during Poplars, and it's the 2nd to last book in the series where Anne is the official main character. And it's basically the last one where she's still somewhat of a "child." After Anne's House of Dreams you won't see her so much.

There were times when I felt like Windy Poplars was too dreary and boring for me to bear, and that I should just stop reading it, but nowadays I appreciate to the full the fact that I could read it.

I'm reading them in the order specified on Goodreads. I just started Anne's House of Dreams. I am so happy to discover the wonderful continuation of the story of Anne's life, I was previously unaware of the depths the books went to.

I wouldn't recommend skipping Windy Poplars personally.

Molly Pendley I read Anne of the Island before Anne of Windy Poplars, should I read Windy Poplars, Ingleside, or Rainbow Valley next?
