You know what's lacking on good reads - A duplication check!

It would be nice if there was an export option, but there is a duplication check! :) Go to "my books," choose the "edit" view, and click "find duplicates." Not an option for the group books, unfortunately. Or searching the shelves. :/

But some of them have lots of descriptive sex in them.
I've tried to indicate in my review area the race of characters and if there's lots of sex or not. If I didn't and you want to know, please don't hesitate to ask

Thanks new_user
Do you notice that if the same book has a different cover that it can be added twice, heck thrice? :-)

Yeah, i hear that LOL

Adding books to my own Goodread shelves can be tiresome, especially, when I am adding 100 books, like I have done two Saturdays ago.

There were 4 that I couldn't get added. They were published by the IRC. But I'm all added out - at least for the day :-)

I've added a book Boaz Brown. You may want to check it out. I think you will like it

Oh you want to steer clear of that one! Sorry to say it was an unmitigated disaster of a book!

Not really, Justine. Since my book PROMISES was released, I've seen the same photo used on 3 other books in some form. I investigated. What's happening is believe it or not there really is limited photo stock out there. All the cover artists are pulling from the same places so you have overlap. Unless publishers/authors are willing to pay a lot of money to hire their own models and do their own photoshoots it will continue to happen. Even the NY houses are pulling from the same stocks.
Unless you're one of the NY Times bestsellering authors odds are good the cover used is coming from stock photos that everyone else is pulling from.

Ah thanks for explaining that LaVerne, but with the development in computer graphics can't they just create other images

really? I wouldn't have thought so. I mean I look at scifi books with space ships on them and they don't look cartoonish to me.
Does a romance book have to have the pic of the characters on them? Can't they just have a rose or a garter belt or a thong or a pair of lips or some such?

There are several duplicates on the bookshelves now. I was trying to send you a private message about this, but I simply couldn't get the message sent. So after 5 tries, I gave up
I would have deleted the duplicates, but I thought that this was something a mod should do and I didn't want to step on any toes :-)

Yeah a lot of cover artists use the same stock photo sites. I've seen a few I can identify right away. Harlequin sometimes doubles up on the same pic too. It's kinda weird heh.

That's true, but graphics seem to work better for sci/fi books not romance books. And no romance books don't necessarily have to have a pic of a character or characters on them, some don't. It's just a matter of preference of the author or publisher. But the majority and I think traditionally, romance books tend to have pictures of the characters on them. Much more so than any other genre.
Personally as a reader I don't care what's on the cover, if I know the authors work or the blurb on the back cover seems interesting. That being said, if I'm just browsing the shelves for a romance book it's the ones with interesting covers, usually they include people, that tend to catch my attention enough to pull it from the shelf.

They were just done early today. If you sort the books by Author order they are easy to find that way. I'll see if I can identify them. I noticed about 5 or so this morning

Ok here are 3 of them:
something deeper - shara azod
Love out loud - marilyn lee
nights of desire - marilyn lee

Well you do have a point there. It does help me to bypass lots of books I would have otherwise had stopped to investigate. And it's way easy to spot an IR if the characters are smack dab on the front!
Me personally, I don't care for the pictures of characters to be on the cover of a book. I like to imagine how the characters look to me.
Some characters on the book don't match the characters in the book. I don't want to see one race on the cover and inside the book, another race.

Do you guys think we should organize the shelves by pairing since people look out for them? BWWM, etc. What do you think?

Do you guys think we should organiz..."
hmmmmmmm that's a good idea but how many pairings
1 BWWM
2 WWBM
3 BWNA
4 BWAM
And what about those of the paranormal genre. I would be happy to take a look and see
And if I come across anymore dupes I will be happy to delete em :-)

See, and that's the thing with this site that we've talked about. I've noticed that if you choose the book from Amazon.com and someone has already logged it to the shelf but they did so from Goodreads. The site doesn't mark it added. I've noticed this on some occasions. Isn't that weird?!
I've added a shelf BWWM. When a book is added, the person posting the book can choose the BWWM option.
Now, does anyone know if all the books listed here falls under the BWWM category. If so, I can try to add as many as I can under the BWWM option, but not until I get home.
I've also added the following shelves:
WWBM
BWNA
BWAM
So, you should be able to pick the shelves the book falls under.

Thanks for creating those shelves New_User.
Yeah, I think all the books probably fall under BWWM.

Would it be okay to add a erotic and non erotic designation? That would be most helpful in sifting through the books. :-)

Well there's a big difference between sensual romance and erotica. Erotica is usually based around the sexual relationship with strong words that may not be suitable for a wide audience. Such as by Marilyn Lee. Erotic romance still has the supposed HEA but the sex scenes are not as continuous and the words are more sensual.
It's more difficult to designate now with the epublishers sometimes selling high erotic content as regular romance. But usually you designate each by heat level or check the publisher's site where the books are listed under. That's how it's usually done with most publishers.

I don't read erotic books, but wouldn't a person that buy and read erotic books know the book is erotic?
Isn't Red Rose Publishing, a company that produces erotic books? All books listed that comes from that company can go under erotic.
I'm going to create an erotic shelf and non-erotic shelf.
An erotic shelf was already created, so I have created an non-erotic shelf.

If we're categorizing based on publisher, I think most readers know their erotic publishers -and that's many times indicated in the book thumbnails- so even that might be redundant.
That's true, Arch, they would know. But someone coming in just starting out with IR may not know. Some authors stick with erotica and some don't so I designated which ones I recognized. Red Rose does both erotic and mainstream. One good thing is they have the book listing under the erotica heading so one can sift through easily. Publishers like Ellora's Cave is an automatic erotic designation.
I was wondering where that non-erotic shelf came from lol. I added a non-erotic romance shelf as well just in case someone is looking for strictly romance. But I put most of the non-erotic reads under both shelves just in case someone is looking for an overall genre without the erotic content. That should be really helpful though!
I shelved most of the books I recognized under what I remember from the characters and content. Most of the authors I recognize are strictly erotic but some I'm not quite sure of so I left it.
This is great!

Okay, please remove the books from non-erotic and put them, under non-erotic romance books. I will delete non-erotic.
You all handle the books.

Oh no. I think it would be good to keep them because sometimes readers are looking for more than just non-erotic romance. Sometimes they want a non-erotic IR suspense or something that isn't really romance-y and the non-erotic headline would help them find that particular book, you know? Kinda like the David Handler and Judith Smith-Levin books which would fall under that.
We should keep it. :-D
