PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments I would love a book club. I used to a very small one. There were only three of us, but it was cool to have someone to discuss things with. I have a butt load of books, some read and lots unread. I would be willing to re-read something as well. I think it would be fun.

new_user I love to discuss! Especially with this intelligent crowd. ;) Let's do it! Might not be able to get all of the books, but I'll join when I can. :)

What book are you all thinking about reading? I might can't get my hand on it. I probably will have to get it on loan from the library. They will have to see if they can find it and it might take a few weeks.

Another thing, do we have to be finished with the book, before we discuss the book? I

new_user I kinda like it when the discussion's all in one thread, although it's nice to be able to post while you're reading without spoiling. Too bad we don't have spoiler tags. I guess we can always do the ***SPOILERS FOR CHAPTER 3*** thing. Or we can divide the discussion if you guys know a critical point/cliffhanger in the story, kind of a halfway point. That way there's two threads. I like that even better.

message 5: by PT (new)

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments You mention it, you lead it.
It's kind of like that saying, "He who smelled it, dealt it."
Ha, ha, ha. Hee, hee, hee. Ho, ho, ho.

Eugenia,

I am not from Houston.

As for reading Unfinished Business. I can't. My library doesn't have the book. Someone didn't turn it back in. It's sad, when people don't bring books back.

No, I know what you mean, a spoiler thread and a non-spoiler thread, but to be honest, I haven't seen that that's useful. No one uses the non-spoiler thread and people just post when they're done reading. People tend not to post every few chapters.

So I would recommend either one big thread where we carefully mark our spoilers with big gaps and lots of stars or just divide the book discussion into two parts, chapters 1-XX (rather than an arbitrary selection, maybe you can recommend a place where there's a critical revelation, plot point, etc.) and chapters XX-End. What do you think?

new_user Arch, what about the city library?

No libraries in my parish have the book. They would have to get it from out of state and who knows, if the book is not already checked out. I will just join you all on your next book's choice.

message 11: by PT (new)

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments Why don't we all take turns picking a book for the month that way everyone gets to participate at some point.
Arch, you must live in Louisiana. I don't know of any other states with parishes. What part?

message 12: by Arch , Mod (new)

Arch | 6707 comments Mod
Lonestrapt,

I am sure there has to be more than one state with a parish, right? :)

message 13: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL. You already mentioned you're from Louisiana, Arch. Don't worry, it'll be our secret, LOL. ;)

Hey Shunda. I was traveling this weekend and now I'm in class. I missed you guys. This is my first chance to really get online although I should be studying.
I like the idea of a book group read. I left Unfinished Business at home, so I probably won't be able to participate.

I did bring Being Plumville, Beyond Blue Eyes, AJ's Serendipity, I have some ebooks that are IR, and I also have Ironic by Pamela Leigh Starr. But if you guys are doing Unfinished Business, I'll try to read it when I can in jump into the forum when I finish it.

I'll be here most of May. If I get to go home, I'll grab it. Or I'll read it when I get back home (if I get back home). :)

message 22: by new_user (new)

new_user Awesome, I should have plenty of time to read this one. :)

Oh, I'm in.

I will not be participating. Unless, somehow, when I go to the library tomorrow and the book is for sale.

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments You should definitely have fun this week. What actual day is your birthday? Happy birthday in advance.

message 28: by PT (new)

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments Sounds pretty good.
I'm excited too. I have my copy and I am ready to start reading.

message 29: by PT (new)

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments I should probably wait because I will be finished early and then start reading something else and forget what the book is about again.
See, it's really just a viscous cycle.

So are we going to have a chat a specific time or will there be questions that we can just answer at our leisure?

message 32: by new_user (new)

new_user I think questions are a good way to go about it because they'll generally stir up observations that you noticed while reading.

message 33: by PT (new)

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments I'm not good with just one, so I have a few suggestions:
1) "The Color of Love" by Sandra Kitt
2) "Blame It on Paradise" by Crystal Hubbard
3) "Zora and Nicky" by Claudia Mair Burney

message 34: by PT (new)

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments Oddly enough, I have the first two, but haven't read them and I have read the last one, but don't own it.

message 35: by new_user (last edited May 14, 2009 09:22PM) (new)

new_user Why don't we allow nominations (maybe cap it at 10 books) for a week or so, and then we can vote in a poll? :) I know I can get number 2.

Btw, loving our discussion so far. It's so great to talk about these books with you ladies.

message 36: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL, okay, five sounds fine. There's always the next months for more suggestions. :)

message 37: by new_user (last edited May 16, 2009 08:09PM) (new)

new_user Okay, in the future, let's keep suggestions to one book per month for each member (unless it looks like we have some extra room), since we're limiting the number of nominations to five. :)

For now, the rule's first come, first serve. 3 nominations in already.

message 38: by new_user (last edited May 17, 2009 10:17AM) (new)

new_user Which decision? :? LOL.

message 39: by new_user (new)

new_user Oh, well, we were going to wait for more suggestions and then poll, remember? :)

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 1216 comments How about going for something edgy this time?

I nominate Bridget Midway's 'Love My Way'. That should generate an interesting discussion.

message 41: by new_user (new)

new_user Thanks, Vixenne. Room for one more choice, and then I'll post the poll. :)

I just don't want to always have books that are so heavy-handed. Someone suggested Sandra Kitt's 'The Color of Love' and while I give her major kudos for having tackled interracial romance early on, I am not a fan of the book (yes I know, heresy lol).

Variety should be the spice of life (and reading) when it comes to books. Still, I will totally go with whatever gets chosen.

I have requested some books at the library. Some interloan books and I didn't know that they would all come in at once. I have like six interracial books to read. I might be able to participate in the June reading. If the book is an erotic book, no matter which month. I will not be participating in that reading.

Right now, I'm reading two of the interracial books that I have checked out. No Commitment Required by Seressia Glass and Scandal In Copper Lake. After reading these two books, I plan to move on to Best of Luck Elsewhere by Trisha Haddad.

message 44: by new_user (last edited May 18, 2009 10:48AM) (new)

new_user Yeah, don't worry, Eugenia. I left a week for everyone to get their books. We have a good variety of choices from everyone now. I wanted to give more people an opportunity to participate for June. We have five. I'll post the poll.

message 45: by new_user (last edited May 18, 2009 10:57AM) (new)

new_user Okay, poll's up, guys! Go vote!

I absolutely loved No Commitement Required! Great story, its very real and you'll experience every emotion Yvonne does! Best of Luck Elsewhere is just plain crazy, but its a great read. Eliza will tend to get on your nerves a bit, but you'll be surprised at the end.

Thanks Candice. I have a little over a hundred pages left to read to No Commitement Required.

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 1216 comments That's true in the opposite too. If everyone chooses The Color of Love, I'll have to re-read it and see if I have gained a different perspective. It works out great all-around!

Don't worry about not liking "The Color of Love." I got flack when I voiced my displeasure in one of Marilyn Lee's work. Not here; somewhere else. I still stand behind my opinion however in the minority I am.

message 50: by new_user (new)

new_user Oh, I hope no one's afraid to voice their opinion. I know it's easy to get carried away with the books we love (not that I've read any Marilyn Lee).
