Rogue Readers - So. OR discussion

Hi all?? Anybody??

I have been trying to find a book group in this area for a long time. I have lived in the area just over a year but haven't been able to find much in the way of reader friends. I can't believe I finally found a goodreads group specific to the area! But, I'm kind of disheartened to see that it's not exactly "active". If anyone sees this and would like to help bring this group back from the dead I would love to hear from you!

I'm from Grants Pass. I love to read books by Kate Morton, Pat Conroy, Susanna Kearsley, James Patterson & many others. I just read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed & loved it.
I'm not sure what a "book group" does. You'll have to let me know!

Like a book club sort of I guess, haha. Just people in the area to talk to about books. I have that book Wild on my list to read someday, glad to hear it is good.

Your profile is private so i can't compare our books Dola, but I read The Night Circus about a month ago and loved it.

Also, Is there any animal abuse in The Night Circus? That's why I couldn't read Water For Elephants.

Umm no, I don't remember there even being animals in this circus other than some kittens. It's not really that kind of like Ringling Brother's or whatever type of circus. That is what made it really neat. It is more like magicians and stage acts but you will have to read it it to find out. If there's animal abuse in Water For Elephants I will definitely take that off my list. I love Elephants!

Oh yeah, to compare books you just go to someone's profile by clicking their username and underneath the details box there should be some green links that say Send a Message and Compare Books is there. If you like horror/supernatural there were a couple of books we had in common that are on your to-read list: The Seance and The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane are both really really terrific. I read them a few years ago now, but I remember really liking them. I see Odd Thomas is in your favorites, have you read the other books in the series?

No, Odd Thomas was the only one. I used to love horror books (Stephen King, Anne Rice) but now I prefer something more uplifting. I still like a good ghost story, though.

Yeah the Odd Thomas series is pretty dark and dreary especially in later ones. The three books I suggested in my previous message should be okay though I think you would like them. I can't really remember what happens in the Seance though you might want to check out the description.

The Night Circus was a great read!! I actually tattooed a quote from that book on my foot.

There is very little- it drives the plot of the story though. I am in way condemning animal abuse btw.

Oh really? Which quote? Yeah I really liked that story. I have heard there is a movie maybe happening, but I almost don't want there to be. I don't think it would ever live up to expectations I would have from how good the book is.

Hi all, I'm new to the group and to the Pacific Northwest. Can anyone recommend novels or good nonfiction set in Oregon? I need to get a flavor of the area! I moved here from the California desert, so all these trees are new to me.

I can't vouch for whther any are a good representation of Oregon or any good though. That must be sort of a shock, coming from the desert to the trees I mean. It gets pretty hot here in the summer (at least in So. Oregon) but maybe it is cooler here than where you're from. What brings you to the area? My husband and I have only lived in this part of Oregon a little over a year.
