Whats the best survival tip you've ever read in a novel, or you think is essential?

Do you know the emergency procedures in your city?

Do you have an emergency pack, and what's in it?

What is the thing you would miss the most if facing the destruction of civilization?

A M H | 45 comments Best survival tip I've ever read.. Hmm.. I would have to say: stay in the heavily fortified vehicle, play loud music in a place, so that any zombies around will come out of hiding out of a abandoned store you want to loot, or drive away with music off so zombies will go to last place you just left is a good tip. I learned that from "Aftermath: Wanderer (Aftermath Zombie series)" By Richard Schwarz.
No I don't know the emergency procedures nor do I have a pack.
The thing I would miss most.. Drive thru Food... But we zombies still got a lot of fast food to catch so I guess it's a compromise. ;)

•Pack light
•Don't use automatic guns, they waste bullets
•Have short hair, tight clothes
more coming soon...

Janna (vocaljstreet) | 20 comments I don't so much have an emergency pack as a stash. There is a general area where I keep things that could go in an emergency bag. I just buy two of stuff that's useful and hold on to one of the items when it's convenient. I buy super econo bottles of benedryl, tylenol, aspirin, topical ointments, ibuprofen, and other first aid things. I keep plenty of water stored with bags of salt and sugar available for electrolyte solution as well as immodium. I used to live on a farm, so I have some things like oil lamps and solar lights, plus I can make my own. Dressings and bandaged are cheap and you can never have too much. I keep 90 days supply of the medicines I think I might need, and I have a few full rounds of broad spectrum antibiotics... ssssshhhh, don't think I'm supposed to. I learned how to weave and make rope, again farmgirl here. I don't have a personal armory like some nervous folks, but I'm really good friends with many that do.
My personal beliefs tips are:

the harder and more uncomfortable hygiene becomes, the more important it is to stick with it;

more people are better than less people, as long as you have the upperhand;

crisco is amazing, but lard can be even better, have plenty of fat/oil somewhere or be willing to render your own (yuck)

a place isn't secure until you have water, water, and more water;

if you can make a power source, you can ionize your own water, but I still suggest bleach when it's under $1 a gallon, write the water: bleach proportions on the bottle with a sharpie (look it up, you'll remember it longer that way)

Hahha Janna I like you more and more with every post you make

Where I come from we have saying - you don't refuse water and you don't trow away food. So you can see how I have the mentality to keep things as well. If I was living in my own place I would be doing the same thing, even know I have too many pharmacological meds.
We'll be very quite on the antibiotics issue! At least they last years before the expire and as rule [again where I come from] you don't go anywhere without some. They are sold freely there, and they do come in handy when the local doctors under prescribe them.

If I lived in a farm I would've built a shelter I think. Do you live in US? Cause if you do I would advise for that shelter. Seems like there are a lot of hurricanes there. Anyway I would love to be MORE self-sufficient then I am or at least have those skills. As someone that got raised in the city and has a very soft heart I can't even step on an ant, I think I will be from the first to fall in any emergency event unless I use my manipulative side and attach myself to someone like a leach! Seriously!

It is interesting because I don't think now how to collect stuff, because I know I don't live in my own apartment, but what options I will have to get them IF something happens. Like what stores should I go and break in first - should it be the military one, the pharmacy, or a food store. What places people would not thing of - like factories and store houses and etc.

What do you use the bleach for? I would have to look that up, sounds not good to be honest.

I think if I was loading on meds it would be antibiotics, painkillers, antiseptics, strong vitamins (B and D), aspirin. I would get medical literature as well as chemistry and how to produce certain chemicals. Example - insulin! It is a natural product that should be available from animals, I'm sure they didn't produce it in laboratory in the beginning. Maybe make a mini lab.

Anyway I must say from all of us here you stand the biggest chance to survive. May I have your address please? [Jk.]

There are so many things that can come handy if something happens and most of the population is really unprepared. For example - I can't ever drive car. Though I think if I have to I will manage with the driving, hopefully the road rules will be irrelevant. But if you have actual knowledge on cars it might be applied elsewhere. Like what about small planes, that would also be useful.

Janna (vocaljstreet) | 20 comments Where are you from originally? How is emergency preparedness handled there? Do you trust your government?

You could make insulin from a hog or a cow without too much trouble, but you'd still need a way to cool it.

My original profession was as an EMT/FF. The guys on my shift and I used to sit around and create zombie apocalypse plans for survival (ZAPS.) We always thought that if you're gonna raid, the way to do it would be to take over a wholesaler like Sam's Clubs. If you do it that way then you don't have to choose what's more important, because you have an enormous amount of everything. It would take quite a few people to defend a Sam's Club, though. Wholesaler's used to have guns and ammunition, but that's changed slightly in the last few years. How much artillery you need really depends on who you are and how well you can use it. From what you've told me about yourself I don't think multiple weapons would help you out much, and your best bet would be gathering supplies and staying under the radar. A lot of medical supplies, including antibiotics, could be gotten from veterinarian clinics if all the pharmacies had already been looted.

The bleach is for disinfecting drinking water. I know, I know, it sounds awful, but it is technically safe in the short term (>a year) and I guarantee it's safer than dehydration, cholera, or typhoid. The amount of chlorine already in US drinking water is about half of the amount the CDC recommends in emergencies. Keep in mind that we are talking about PPM (parts per million,) not ounces or tbsp. One gallon of bleach could disinfect a little under a million gallons of water. You would still need to make some type of particulate filter, but that's not too hard and there are many ways to do that.

Obviously paper reference books are amazing if not preferable but, they're heavy, and if you already have an e-ink reader you can read for a really, really long time on one charge. Think about the things you could store on there like maps, charts, and guides. They don't require wifi to work, just to initially download whatever you want to keep on there. A fully charged e-ink tablet would definitely be in my emergency backpack.

I do live in the US. I live in the heartland where we have tornadoes and bad winters, but no hurricanes. Almost everyone has a basement at the very least. If there are bad storms coming through the night, I usually just have everyone sleep in the basement for the night. The kids don't mind, they think it's a party, and my husband and I have a bed and a couple TV's down there. The tornadoes where I live are usually small, but that rule has been broken an exceptionally high number of times in the last couple years. Our winters can be fierce.
No one person can be an expert on everything, and that's why more people are better than fewer people. I try to have well rounded interests, but I know what I'm good at and what I'm just not ever going to learn. Thankfully my other half has a lot of skills that I don't. My husband builds things like flame throwers out of vacuum cleaners and talks about how to make generators, and while I learn a tremendous amount from him I will never look at a vacuum and see a weapon.

Originally - Bulgaria, I live in UK now

How is emergency preparedness handled there? - in Bulgaria it is not! We have alarms and some bomb shelters.
Do you trust your government? - absolutely not.

I don't think much can be done in UK as well. I think in ANY emergency a populated area is the worst place to be. I think a rule should be grab and run. Or just run and then grab.
I agree purified water is better then no water. In The Hunger Games they used Iodine for the water. I wonder if this can be used. What about Peroxide

Is EMT/FF a Resident Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician?

Something like a big shop would be targeted by everyone. A lot of people packed in one place - not a good idea in a Zombie Apocalypse or any other infection related contingency. Of course if they sell a lot of things I see why you would want to go there. I don't think there is something like this here. There are very few military shops.

I think I am good at staying under the radar but women can easily get noticed as easy pray. A group would be better. I also believe I can learn myself to shoot some basic weapon and drive a car, but I would not be able to choose ammunition for a weapon of start a car without the keys [maybe even not with them].

I didn't think of Veterinarian clinics. It is a smart idea. Maybe keeping heavy sedatives for emergencies would be good as well. [I am imagining Dexter with a syringe]. I think a lot of things can be utilized as weapons, I have some basic self defense training, but that is not something that will work against more then one man unprepared for you to fight back person. I think it is important to have things that you still can use but not be recognized as weapons. Small trivial things that people might not thing you would be able to use. Maybe even keeping a bottle of water of alcohol with a poison inside.

I think the most awful scenario would be if people turn to cannibalism.

and if you already have an e-ink reader you can read for a really, really long time on one charge. Think about the things you could store on there like maps, charts, and guides.

That is a good idea. There are a lot of survival, military books. It is worth keeping some just in case. Incl few medical ones. I would actually look into this :D
We might make a list of good books to have in emergencies.

My husband builds things like flame throwers out of vacuum cleaners and talks about how to make generators, and while I learn a tremendous amount from him I will never look at a vacuum and see a weapon.

You are the perfect couple it seems. I think I would feel safe if I was your kid! I also think people like you would have the most chances. People in born and raised in cities will be first to die with the old and sick, except the bums. I think they are smart when it comes to survival. They are doing it every day just on a different scale.

Janna (vocaljstreet) | 20 comments Wow, carrying hidden weapons like poisoned water is an amazing idea! Especially if you're female! I had never considered that option.

Iodine could absolutely be used, but it's gonna be expensive and taste bad. I'm not as sure about the h2o2, and if you choose that it will probably take quite a bit per gallon which doesn't give you much time to come up with a plan. It would be good to know of several options, though. If you loot that vet clinic you may end up with plenty of iodine.

The US government makes lots of good suggestions on being prepared for at least a month without electricity and food but, I don't think people in the US and probably the UK realize how bad government can be. My hubby worked alongside FEMA during hurricane Katrina, and the conditions were unbelievable. The thing everyone needs to remember is that the government's objective is to preserve the state and they could care less about individuals. Refugee camps exist to control and contain, not to assist.

Our kids think we're crazy. They don't understand why we can only fit one car in a three car garage, and they hear me call their dad crazy when he's testing a new project.

I actually saw it in a movie/tv show. Don't remember which one but I was really impressed. It really stayed with me. I think also any bad taste to a water can be easily explained with the lack of fresh water.

Very good point. Everyone hear feels safe because the underground is also bomb shelters, but please I need one or two hours with bus, train to get there. It is a false feeling of safety and that can kill you.

You know I was thinking it is good to know how to recognize if food water is contaminated. After all an apocalypse might be a consequence of a chemical/biological attack.

Our kids think we're crazy. Better crazy but safe!
