message 1: by Penny (new)

Penny | 26 comments How many books does everyone read though cover to cover at one time? I think i have 6 on the go at the minute...just a little chaotic to say the least.

message 2: by Lesley (new)

Lesley (laparks) I try to keep it at one book at a time.....but sometimes I do have 2 going at once, especially if one is on the kindle and one is a library book.

I find that the fewer books I have going the better, because if I'm in the midst of one that's just ho-hum ok, I'm more apt to keep at it and finish it so I can 'reward' myself with a better next book.

message 3: by Anna (new)

Anna Wadlow (awadlow42) | 87 comments 6

message 4: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments I have two on the go right now and just finished two. I normally only read one book at a time. I can't imagine reading 6. I feel like it would take forever for me to finish the books.

message 5: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I usually do about three. One fiction, one non-fiction, and one audiobook. I'll go as high as four but no more than that--any more and I start abandoning books (not because they're not good but because I'll just forget to pick them back up with everything else going on).

message 6: by Sara (last edited Jun 12, 2013 11:22PM) (new)

Sara Weather (saraweather) I am reading 5 right now. I dnf a lot of books so I have to read a certain amount of books at a time.

message 7: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Tadlock (crystaldspence) I have only done 3, usually a Beta (if I am needed), 1 of my read 4 review books, and a Goodreads First Reads physical book. I try to read some of each one each day...

message 8: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments I usually have 3-4 books going at a time. Right now I'm doing 4.

message 9: by Felicia (new)

Felicia (feliciajoe) I mostly just have 1. Right now I have two. I find it very confusing to read too much at the same time.

message 10: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I'm currently reading 3 right now. All different genres so I don't get bored, lol. If they were the same genre, I'd start getting confused. :)

So true. I once was reading 2 time travel books...way too confusing!! :P

message 12: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments I usually have three to four books at a time. I try to have them be completely different, or like Ashley, I start to get confused. I usually have an audiobook, kindle, and library book, and if I'm reading a book for my bible study, I throw that in the mix too.

message 13: by Robyn (new)

Robyn | -15 comments i usually read two at a time but use the currently reading list as my reading this month list. seeing them on the main page helps me to keep track on what is next without letting me look around in the groups and get sidetracked

message 14: by Allison (new)

Allison | 60 comments 3 is the magic number for me, i always keep three on hand and try to finish them so I can add another

message 15: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments I'm pretty much like Kara. Usually have one audiobook and one ebook going on, and if a third, it's usually a non-digital one (which is not self-lit, and therefore not viable as bed-reading!). Occasionally a graphic novel in the pile, too.

message 16: by Alison (new)

Alison G. (agriff22) | 1190 comments Usually I have 2, but no more than 3. I always have a physical nook and a nook book going at the same time.

message 17: by Lee-Anna (new)

Lee-Anna | 14 comments Penny wrote: "How many books does everyone read though cover to cover at one time? I think i have 6 on the go at the minute...just a little chaotic to say the least."

I do this ALL THE TIME! I thought it was a rare quirk as most of my circle look at me like I'm nuts. I look at it this way, I don't seem to have any issue keeping the plots straight and sometimes I... get tired of a book or more acurately, another one draws my interest more. I eventually get back to them though. Good to know it's not just me.

message 18: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (carolinestp) | 40 comments I prefer to read only one book at a time, but I can read two if one isn't fiction.

message 19: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments I knew that the members of this group were impressive but I had no idea that everyone could juggle so many books at a time. I can only do one at a time. I've tried again and again to do more than one but most of the time I end up letting one sit until the other is finished. I have tried audiobooks, but my commute is very short and I also don't pay as much attention when listening as I do actually reading the book.

message 20: by Penny (new)

Penny | 26 comments I love listening to audio books, but I always find that I fall asleep to them

message 21: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 402 comments Robyn wrote: "i usually read two at a time but use the currently reading list as my reading this month list. seeing them on the main page helps me to keep track on what is next without letting me look around in..."

I do the same thing. I am usually reading 2 or possibly 3 (one audiobook, one fiction and one non-fiction) at a time. In my currently reading, I'm likely to put up to 10 books so that I will, in fact, read those books.

message 22: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Well I prefer to just read one at a time...but a few days ago I had four on the go and then finished them slowly and now I am back up to 3. I don't know how this happens. I am going to try to make August a slower month.

message 23: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I began reading The English Girl (Gabriel Allon, #13) by Daniel Silva by Daniel Silva last week and today I made an executive decision to put this book down even though I read almost 200 pages. I was plain bored although this author usually finds me riveted to my seat. Maybe it's not the right time or the right book but I put it down. Now I see it is available in the audio version at one of my libraries and I hope it's still there tomorrow morning. I did begin Elegy for Eddie the 9th book (I think it's the 9th book) in the Maisie Dobbs series for a couple of challenges. I first read this book when a clerk at Barnes & Noble suggested to me and am I glad I listened to her. I love this time period - between WWI and WWII and the place, London and most of all the character of Maisie Dobbs. An instantly I fell in love with this author's writings and scenarios.

The author Elizabthe Berg writing about a female character in her book, Say When, author writing about a female character said, "You know before you know." In this case the woman's husband was cheating on her but in my case I translate this to mean, I generally know when a book is pleasing to me or when it's not within maybe 25 pages.

So, how many pages do you read before you know it's a winner to you and at what point do you give up on a title.

message 24: by Sara (new)

Sara Weather (saraweather) It depends some books I can tell immediately in the first page or even chapter it is not for me. I have experienced so many books that do not get better that if it does not have something to make me want to continue I dnf early on. I usually wait until 19% of a book even if it is good to add it to my currently reading list.

message 25: by Penny (new)

Penny | 26 comments Sara wrote "It depends some books I can tell immediately in the first page or even chapter it is not for me." I am still getting to that stage of putting a book down when it is not getting any better. I am a bit OCD with books and I find that if i don't finish one that I have put down it tends to bug me for months after.

message 26: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I'm the same way, Penny. There's only a small handful of books I put down without finishing.

message 27: by Sara (new)

Sara Weather (saraweather) I dnf a lot of books. I even have a ratio for my dnfing, for every one book I finish I will mostly likely dnf 4.

message 28: by Jack (new)

Jack Hansen | 357 comments It varies, presently 5, usually 3. Certain books I savor because they are full of great information that I may want to quote or let sink in so that I may apply what wisdom they offer. I read the Bible this way. I am on Revelations, now, and when I finish it, it will be the first time I read it from cover to cover.

message 29: by Jade (new)

Jade | 12 comments I think I have 5 or 6 right now. I like to have different books going for different moods I am in! ;) I am also pretty good at remembering what is going on so it works for me! :)

message 30: by Sam (new)

Sam (sam222) | -11 comments I prefer to read only one book at a time but ever once and awhile I have two books going. The most I've had going at once was three.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Goodness, I feel weird. I have 11 books going now and I've had up to 16 going. Surprisingly enough, I still absorb the details and I can focus on each book easily even if I have to go back a page for review.

message 32: by LynnB (new)

LynnB Usually 3, but sometimes up to 5. That seems to be my limit. They have to be different though, ie. a biography, a different type of non-fiction, a mystery/suspense, general literature and a fluff-read might be going at one time. Any more and I tend to forget about reading some of the books ... then they end up in my "must finish someday" pile. Which reminds me, I must get to work again on that pile! If I don't care for a book, though, I don't try to work my way though it. There are too many good books out there to waste my time on books I don't care for, no matter how popular they might be.
