I read this book about 3/4 years ago.

British Novel, Young Couple's First Child has a disease(Tay Sachs I think)

** SPOILER **
The mother is falsely accused of killing her child. she goes to jail.
I can't remember if she was cleared or not but I think she was.

the name of the book is NOT The Still Point of the Turning World
