Cherie Magnus (tangocherie) | 6 comments I'll be happy to be a beta reader of a memoir, travel, literary fiction book. And I'd hope someone will do the same for my memoir, The Church of Tango.

Satinder Hi guys,

I'm looking to source beta readers but from some of the posts I've read in other Goodreads groups, it is a tricksy business indeed. Does anyone have any tips on how to find reliable ones? I've been reading some scary stories about beta readers who you never hear back from or worse, who rip off your story ideas.

Any advice?

Thank you in advance!

Cate's Book Nut Hut (catesbooknuthut) I'm not a writer, but I have proofread movie scripts and other works. I'd be more than happy to read anything for you, although I do draw the line at romance.

Satinder Thanks Amelia and Cate!

You're right; I think it's just a matter of having faith and 'speculate to accumulate' as they say.

Cate, thank you so much for the offer. I am entering a short story competition and as my friends are all biased (!), I would like an objective eye on my story. The genre is fantasy and right now, it is at draft stage. You could send me a message with your email address and we could get the ball rolling?

D.J. Edwardson | 64 comments Hello everyone. I'm looking for beta readers for my upcoming novella, "The Jammer and the Blade". If you'd like to get a feel for the story and see if it would be something you'd like to read, I've posted an excerpt from the first chapter on my website:

http://www.djedwardson.com/jammer-and...

If you'd like to know more before reading the excerpt here is a short blurb about the story:

Here's a quick blurb about the novella if you'd like a bit more information:

Sun li strives to live by the Code, the ancient creeds of her people. But when her father's life hangs in the balance, her beliefs will be tested. Desperate to save him, she takes a job as a hired blade with an undersider named Brit. And soon it becomes not a question of whether her father will survive, but will she?

Set in a futuristic world where human augmentation seems like the only way ahead, this is a cautionary tale about those who will pay any price to get what they want. A dying world, global war, and a crime-ridden city all form the backdrop for the sci-fi adventure, The Jammer and the Blade.

If anyone would like some proof reading help, you can PM me!! My book won't be finished for a couple of months, but once I'm done with it I would like to exchange it with you as an "assurance" that we won't steal each others work.

If there's some kind of online contract that would be good though??

Carrying on from my previous post, I will proofread anything EXCEPT erotica and romance.

Karen A. Wyle (kawyle) | 278 comments Maureen, I'd love to have you as a beta reader for my WIP, Division (science fiction). I'm hoping to have it ready for beta readers in three to four weeks. (See my separate post for a few more details.)

Karen A. Wyle (kawyle) | 278 comments I'd love to find a few more beta readers for my WIP, Division. It's near-future science fiction, and involves a novel and somewhat controversial use of cloning technology -- but like all my books, it is largely a relationship story.

message 13: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 107 comments I've got a question that I'd like to put out to my fellow authors. My current WIP is set in the south. I'm trying to write one of the characters with a strong southern accent, so I started leaving off the "g" on -ing words. EX: Somethin, comin, etc. But I felt like for consistency I should do this for all -ing words and now my manuscript is covered in little read squiggly lines because Word does not like the misspellings. I'm starting to worry that it's overkill. Thought?

message 14: by Satinder (new)

Satinder Hi Tracey, this is of course only my opinion and you should do what you think best BUT I would not do that throughout. I think scattering it here and there still shows consistency and gives the reader an idea of who is talking. I'm just trying to imagine how it would look as a reader. I would think, "I understand who is speaking here. The author doesn't need to bash me on the head with it." :)

Good luck with your story!

Satinder

Tracey Smith | 107 comments I think I agree with you Satinder. When I altered a few words here and there I thought it added to the distinction of the character, but when I started revising all the -ing words it really felt like too much.

message 16: by Moncia (new)

Moncia Macdonald | 2 comments I'll beta read, but really only want to exchange with YA folks. Any takers? I just finished a book that's coming out November first, so I'm happy to read first, and exchange later... I'm going to have to get started on book #2 in a couple weeks.
