What are you reading right now?

Thanks!

I'm on Eldest, did you get farther?

rachel likes evil male models! hahaha
anybody read/reading THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS series? thats what im on right now...

^^im still reeling from the butchery that was ERAGON, and i'm hoping they dont do it with PERCY JACKSON, or ima be MAD!!
ps me and of my other (goodreads) friends are reading THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS--any takers on this board?
I've read The Mortal Instruments series. I think the writing is mediocre, and that the plot and characters are certainly not original, but it's not boring, at least. (That's why I read all three books.) I guess the books are fun to read when there's nothing better to do, though there's nothing great about them.
I didn't see the Inkheart movie, but I read and liked all three books. Maybe I'll rent the film.
I haven't seen Eragon either, but I won't bother since I didn't like the book.

(The Bartimaeus Triology is a little bit like Harry Potter. It is about magicians in London, and a djinni. I think a djinni is some sort of geni.)
I love the Bartimaeus trilogy! They're some of my favorite books, partly because of the highly enjoyable footnotes. Which book are you on?

It depends on what you mean, I guess. If you are referring to the final part, it's not completely unexpected I think, at least based on the earlier events of the third book. I could have used an extra chapter at the end, but I can kind of see why the author wrote it the way he did, but I'm not 100% sure of what you're talking about.

Inkheart: again, the movie was horrible. I agree with everything you said Moaning Myrtle. I was so bugged with the movie adaption. I doubt they'll make more. The movie didn't do well. I know a lot of people really like these books, but I thought they dragged. A lot of description that doesn't go anywhere. It's an interesting concept, but I wasn't pulled into the story like I would have liked.
Fablehaven: I didn't like it until the last 90 pages and my daughter didn't even finish it. I hear each of the books get better, but it wasn't good enough for me to finish. A book about a fairyland should have been exciting, but it was dry. Did you ever find the rest of the series, Swati?
Mortal Instruments: My friend has been trying to get me to read it and I refuse. I hear the writing is bad and the cover looks so trashy. I'm sure the story isn't that bad, but why read something just because everyone else is and they say it's ok? Isn't that why so many people read Twilight and complain about it?
Lord of the Rings: Classic. Yes, it's a little slow to start, but it has stood the test of time and it's a great intricate story. I actually like the movies, except for Two Towers (which is my favorite book), where they kill Faramir's character. He was favorite.
Percy Jackson: I'm about 1/2 way through the first and it's interesting so far. I'm not totally sold on modern mythology, but maybe I will be by the end. It does rip off HP, but it's still good. My daughter loves it and has been reading Greek mythology. I hope the movie will be good.
Hunger Games: I'm surprised nobody's brought this up. Catching Fire just came out yesterday. I'm waiting for my copy. I really enjoyed Hunger Games. The idea seemed weird and it seems like it would be predictable, but it's a good page turner.
And the Uglies. Nobody's mentioned that either. They're pretty good. I haven't read Bartimaeus, but heard it's kind of strange, way advanced language in a kid's novel. But I know people that love it. I haven't read Pendragon either, but know people that like that one too. I guess there are two similar threads about other ya fiction.

_______
the writing is kind of weird; i mean there are times where her literary devices (metaphors, allusions, etc) are pretty creative, but her pacing is weird and events tend to happen in an awkward way... i loved the cover designs! well, the first one that is! i like how they're shiny... but i would definitely give them a try, i actually liked them!
Percy jackson = HP? i did not get that vibe anywhere, at all in the series.
The Mortal Instruments Trilogy read like fanfiction to me. In the beginning, Jace comes of as an exaggerated fanfic version of Draco and there are less obviously annoying character comparisons too, I think (Clary = Ginny). (I'm referring to fanfic, in general; I never read Cassie Claire's Draco Trilogy.) It also seems like sometimes the writing is overly, simplistic, and at others, it seems as though the author is trying too hard to be descriptive. The cheesy dialogue also starts to get tiring very early on.
I agree about Faramir in The Two Towers movie, Annalisa. He and Sam are my favorite characters, so I don't approve of the way they handled his meeting with Frodo, but I still love all three LotR films.

- there are times where she's really descriptive, like some of her metaphors are really clever, and also some of the words she uses are interesting too (i remember her saying that a character spoke "ruminatively" and i thought that was a rather clever word for her to use...id never heard of it before!)
but i mean, she can't be THAT bad, right? she still got published, and apparently her books are on the NY Times bestselling list. i mean, how many times did jk rowling get rejected before they published sorcerer's stone? and yet clare gets published relatively quickly...

Percy Jackson/Harry Potter comparisons: live with bad guardian, bad things happen around you, find out you're different and go to special school, in danger because someone wants you you dead, have to go on mission to save the world at young age (with girl and guy friend). It's a good format so it's going to get borrowed. I'm liking the book, I was just saying it isn't as original as HP was when I first read that.
I do like all of the LOTR's movies. I just meant I didn't like that about the second one. I still own it and watch it though.

I know! It's one of my favorites! That is one of the things that I MUST read!

(but in terms of books, i thought LOTR had more action than the HOBBIT, cause the HOBBIT if i remember correctly was geared more toward children)
I can't wait to see the Hobbit!
The Hobbit was directed more towards children - it is certainly fun to read, but I enjoy LotR much more.

Believe me, they are REALLY good. I agree with you, it doesn't rip off HP, but HP doesn't rip off PJ either. AND it is really funny (to me) in #3.
I don't think the movie will be good though. They made the person who plays as Annabeth be an 18 year old...that part made me upset. The only reason they picked here was because her eyes are grey.

They changed the ages of he characters' ages. The prophecy in the movie is going to be for when he's 21, not 16. Chris Columbus has a mixxed track record. The Harry Potter movies he did are generally thought to be the best adaptations, but his adaptation of Rent is generally disliked.

Do you mean Columbus's adaptations of HP are thought to be the best adaptations of the HP series out of all the directors? I'm not sure why this would be considered the case. PoA is the most critically aclaimed, but all the later movies seem to be considered improvements on the first two films. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you and you mean the HP movies are thought to be the best of Columbus's adaptations?

Were you talking to purist fans? It seems like that's what people think if you're only asking fans you know sometimes, but that doesn't represent the general population (of fans, even). Almost all the people I know greatly prefer the later films, but that doesn't mean some people don't like the first two better. Reviews tend to call the beginning of the series something like "sub-par."

But most of the complaints about what Chris Columbus is doing with the Percy films is centered around the changes he's making. However, we really only know about changes in the appearance and ages of the characters. He may keep everything else the same, or he might change a lot more of it, but he seems to stay pretty close to the books when he does book adaptations.

Don't judge a book by its cover. ;)"
yeah

NOTHING can be as bad as Inkheart ( the movie ) they messed it up! Who made it? I know it's not Warner Brothers, but who?
