Neil Gaiman

This challenge is all about Neil Gaiman and buddy reading!

Join us to read through his books - one a month - as "relaxed" buddy reads . Where a book is chosen as Book of the Month (BOM), we will use that format instead of the BR format (e.g. Coraline is BOM in September 2013).

Challenge Duration: September 2013 - August 2014

How books are chosen Each participant can chose a book for a month until the 12 months have a chosen book. You can use this list as inspiration

List of books:
September 2013 - Coraline - BOM
October 2013 - The Ocean at the End of the Lane - BOM and Ashley Marie's choice
November 2013 - The Graveyard Book - Sonia's choice
December 2013 - Neverwhere - Karen's choice
January 2014 - Stardust - Elizabeth's choice
February 2014 - American Gods - Nicole's choice
March 2014 - Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch - Sarah's choice
April 2014 - Anansi Boys - Cathie's choice
May 2014 - Fragile Things: short fictions and wonders - Anne's choice
June 2014 - Smoke and Mirrors - Amanda's choice
July 2014 -The Sandman, Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes - Pigletto's choice
August 2014 - The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch - Christy's choice

Neil Gaiman has written 32 books

Current challenge goal = 12 books

Completed = 8/12 + 1 bonus!

Interworld was selected as February 2014 BOM so you can use that as a bonus to complete 13 books for the year!

You don't have to - Ashley Marie is our NG *expert* so she can just do another pick :)

message 6: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I would love to be a part of this. Is there any way I'm considered active enough to be able to select American Gods for January?

If nothing else, though, I'm definitely in for Neverwhere.

Karen ⊰✿ | 16595 comments Mod
Sounds good! American Gods I read a while ago, I think I will get more out of it with a group

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments I want to read American Gods and Neverwhere. Just finished The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Also would join for The Graveyard Book' But I just don't want to read Coraline.

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments Karen wrote: "You don't have to - Ashley Marie is our NG *expert* so she can just do another pick :)"

:)

Lord, you guys don't even know how excited I am. My wedding was Stardust themed.

message 10: by Nicole (last edited Aug 13, 2013 05:18PM) (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I haven't managed to finish American Gods. Likewise, Karen, I definitely think I'll get more with a group.

I'm a little iffy about Coraline too, Sarah. There's a part of me that's like 'I've seen the movie and I have soooo many BRs on next month already'. The other part, though, is like 'But... but... BR!' :D

Ashley Marie, why don't we have a Stardust themed month yet? :O

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Can I still choose one and what if he buddies up with another author - because I would like Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett ?

message 12: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Would I have to lead a group and do questions - cause I don't want to do that. I just like to participate.

message 13: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I'm happy to lead a discussion for you if we do that one. It's another one I've been wanting to read for years.

Sarah | 3273 comments Sounds good to me Nicole.

That's fine Sarah, you don't need to lead discussions to participate (or read every book). I'll log into the mod account later (I'm just on my way out) to update the list.

Elizabeth and Anne - Welcome! Would you like to chose a book too, or are you happy to go 'with the flow'?

Ashley Marie - I *must* see photos! I just LOL'd at that! And I really want to read Stardust now! :)

Here's the link to the blog that my photographer did - it doesn't have some of the details that were really book themed (our card box was a library book return, our table numbers were the book covers from our favorites, our favors had little stars on them, stuff like that) - but my cool claim to fame with this is that Neil actually tweeted about it :)

So cool that Neil tweeted about it; I was going to suggest you let him know that you did your wedding based on his book as he's very cool about things like that :-)

Thanks for the link. Awesome!!!

message 27: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments So utterly utterly cool that he proposed by giving you an autographed Neil Gaiman book with the proposal inside. He's very much a keeper (your husband, lol)

message 28: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Beautiful pictures; they really seem to have captured the magic Ashley Marie :-)

message 29: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments I'm loving this idea! Gaiman has always been on my list of authors to read and I just haven't gotten around to him yet. This will definitely give me the kick in the butt to get started! :)

message 39: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I got teary-eyed, too, Nicole. We are wussies, aren't we? Or hopeful romantics. ☺

message 40: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments You guys are making me smile :) Hubby teared up, too, when we got them. I ate ice cream and laughed at him.

This probably illustrates clearly why I read so few romances and so many serial killer books, tbh.

message 41: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments I would love to do this Neil Gaiman challenge!

Also, I love your wedding photos, Ashley! So, so beautiful!

message 42: by Ashley Marie (new)

Great Lara!

Welcome Amanda - do you have a book you'd like to choose?

Ashley Marie - you crack me up!

I'm wondering if we should do this a book a month for a year, so the challnge will be to read 12 NG books in 12 months. Thoughts?

message 45: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments Thanks Karen!
I think I'd like to choose Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman

I like that idea

message 47: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments A year of NG? It's like Christmas came early! If you guys are feeling realllllllyyyy brave, his graphic stuff is brilliant too.

I'm not sure I can take credit for this being my idea - Karen gets that nod! I think I just bullied her into reading Gaiman's cannon by refusing to shut up about how great he is allllll the time.

Haha
Bullied? Is that how I got those red marks on my arm?! ;)
It is true that you are my inspiration Ashley Marie! haha

message 50: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments I confess! :D If Neil Gaiman were a religion, I'd try to convert everyone :)
