I have only read A Thousand Splendid Suns though I think I was somewhat of a minority as people I spoke to preferred The Kite Runner.

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I haven't read any of the ones you are undecided with gemma but the chaperone looks pretty interesting.

message 53: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemmagem20) | 460 comments Thanks everyone, I might give the chaperone a go.

What is the test you did, Jenny?

message 54: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments LOL, not actually a test, I just looked up each book and checked how my GR friends had rated it;)

message 55: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemmagem20) | 460 comments Haha, brilliant! I thought you were going to say something really technical!

message 56: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I was half contemplating on making something up that sounded really exiting...:)

I have heard mixed reviews about Defiance, I'm friend with a couple of girls on here who I would look to for recommendations on YA books because they usually read great books. One of them gave the book five stars while the other gave it only one.

message 59: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) It looked interesting alannah so I'll give it a try when I get it. The end of your life book club was a pretty good read.

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I need something to read after I get through with The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales which I'll be doing the readalong for on the 20 through 31st of this month. After I finish with ghosts and haunts of tennessee, it'll be time to start on the poe collection. I'll need something to read after that. Should I read:

The Gingerbread Man
My Mr. Manny
The Wind in the Willows
The Thirteenth Unicorn
The Enchanted Castle

Please let me know what I should read next after the poe collection. 4 of the 5 I listed are ebooks and one is a paperback. These are on my tbr list with some others. Thanks! :-)

Well I haven't read any of those, but my friend said that she enjoyed The Enchanted Castle. She has good taste, so you might want to start with that.

As for me, I need to read The Iliad and The Odyssey for my civilization class. But I would also like to read something else simultaneously, so here's what I have:

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
The Firm
The Diary of a Young Girl
Mash: A Novel About Three Army Doctors
Catch-22
The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution
The Bell Jar

Any thoughts?

Charbel, I would think you should read something fairly light alongside The Iliad, so I would recommend "The Curious Incident..." which I read a few years ago, and really enjoyed...

Thanks, Shirley! Light and enjoyable is exactly what I need! Especially now since I'm pretty busy with uni.

The Bell Jar is very interesting.

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Diary of a young girl was good charbel. Read it in middle school. Thanks for the reccomendation. I'll have to think about it.

message 66: by Charbel (new)

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments Three great picks! That really narrows it down. Thanks everyone!

message 67: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments @Charbel - I agree with both Shirley and Judy that short and/or light is what you should pick. I personally would pick either The Curious Incident... or the Grisham.

@Amber - I have only read The Wind in the Willows on your list which I liked but didn't love. I really liked Nesbit's Five Children and It growing up & have The Enchanted Castle on my Kindle, so that is what I would choose.

message 68: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) K thanks leslie. :-) I'll think about it.

I loved the second, liked the first ...

message 71: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I have only read the first and very much enjoyed it, it reads a bit like a bibliophile fairytale for adults. I am not sure what you are reading at the moment but if you need a page-turner after some heavier fiction this one would be a good choice.

message 72: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) I thought that the Shadow of the Wind was excellent; much better than the others in the series. Have not heard of the other...

message 73: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments Thanks, I think I will read The Shadow of the Wind next. I could do with a page turner after James Joyce!

Yes Fermin was really funny!!! I found the book a bit confusing in the end though

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments This is a tough one: The Kite Runner or The Bell Jar ?

Don't know the second so I can't tell. The Kite Runner is really beautifull, though

It is a tough one. Although I liked The Kite Runner a little better. Glad you went for it first but I do strongly recommend The Bell Jar.

message 82: by Charbel (new)

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments Yes, though I might not be able to start the bell jar until the new year.

message 83: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) I'll definitely be using this rather a lot. I'm awful at picking which books to read. I'm horrendously indecisive...

I haven't read either, Charbel, but I have heard wonderful things about The Bell Jar.

I haven't done any proper reading in a few days which is really weird for me, haha. I am however looking for a light book on kindle which is not that dear. When I say light, I don't want a long book or one that requires a lot of thought.

message 85: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) what are you going to read Alannah?

My friends have decided they want to start a book and cake club. As the most avid reader, I've been tasked with selecting the 1st book. They want me to chose something short to be read over Christmas and want something modern and if possible not really well known! Any ideas?

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Lovely challenge, Heather! Thinking cap is duly on.

What's the cake going to be though? LOL

message 93: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments How about The Christmas cookie club by Ann Pearlman it had the recipes in too :-)

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

@Tracey, I'll have a look for that one.
@Jean. Haven't decided on the cake yet! I love baking though so will come up with something!

message 95: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Hey heather, a christmas carol by charles dickens would be good with gift of the magi. Twas the night before christmas is short too. :-)

Do they/you want a Christmas-y book or just anything short & modern? I am not suggesting anything, as I don't really do modern, but just wanted clarification.

message 97: by [deleted user] (new)

It doesn't need to be Christmassy. At the moment I'm thinking of suggesting A sense of an ending by Julian Barnes

message 98: by Noel (new)

Noel (noel-brady) I'm commenting here to bump this thread up because it's such a great idea! Maybe some new people who are feeling indecisive will want to post their book options.

message 99: by [deleted user] (new)

I've only just remembered this thread. I did actually suggest A Sense of an Ending but with our busy schedules we still haven't got together to discuss it!
