Thanks Kara, Jean and Laura :)
I had never heard of Dombey and Son before! I think I'll start with that one :)

Even if I studie English literature in University I hadn't heard of it. In the end I think it is my favourite Dickens along with David Copperfield

message 154: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I just started Dombey and Son last week. I'm only a few chapters in but my heart strings have been tugged already. The set up is for a very good story. I can't add more than that yet but I think it may be a good one to start with.
I really enjoyed Nicholas Nickleby, too. My favorite of Dickens' books (of those I've read, of course) is A Tale of Two Cities. It's very different from his usual stories.
I hope you enjoy reading Dickens, Giorgia.

Loved A Tale of Two Cities Petra!

message 156: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I'm hoping to get to A Tale of Two Cities very soon! It will be my first Dickens' :)

message 157: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) If anyone needs any book recommendations, let me know. I'll try to find you something good from the books I've read and enjoyed for you to check out.

message 158: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments Yay, Greg & Alice! I have such a soft spot for that book. I think it's the greatest love story ever. I hope that doesn't turn anyone away from it; it's definitely not a romance, by any stretch of the imagination.

Picking my next book, I'm trying out this reading only one book at a time and it's going well.

My list is:
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson
The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty

message 162: by [deleted user] (new)

The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks is brillant and a fairly quick read. That's the only one of those I've read but I want to read The Hundred-Year-Old Man and The Husband's Secret

message 163: by Noel (new)

Noel (noel-brady) I haven't read any of those but The Hundred Year Old Man sounds really good! Just added it to my own list :) So I vote for that one as your next read.

message 164: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I'd recommend Necessary Lies, it is well worth reading.

message 170: by Erica (new)

Erica | 945 comments I'm trying to get through the books on my shelf at home. What should I read next?

Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende
A Conspiracy of Paper by David Liss
Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson
Currawalli Street by Christopher Morgan or
Fall of Giants by Ken Follett?

message 171: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I've never heard of any of these erica so would not know what to tell you. I hope you enjoy them though.

message 172: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Featherston (kfxston) | 66 comments I don't think I've read any on your list so don't know what to advise. However, I've read a few by Allende and I think she's a fine writer.

message 173: by Noel (new)

Noel (noel-brady) Haven't read them either, but after checking out the descriptions, I'd vote for either Isaac's Storm or Currawalli Street - those sound the best to me. Plus Currawalli has a pretty cover. :)

message 174: by Erica (new)

Erica | 945 comments Haha Shannon....That's a good enough reason for me...Currawalli Street it is :)

message 175: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Erica, I am acquainted with all the writer except Morgan. I have however not read all of them.

Isabel Allende's early novels and those about her daughter are very, very good. I gave Daughter of Fortune four stars, but the third book in the series is even better. I am speaking of The House of the Spirits. That one is truly amazing. You do not have to read the three in order, but all three are certainly worth reading. I would go for Allende's book.

The books you have listed are very different, so maybe your mood should determine your choice?

Still holding you responsible :P Although Laura & I are also big Dickens fans too so perhaps we have created a "Dickens-friendly environment"!

message 193: by Charbel (new)

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments Need help. I fancy some fiction after reading so many nonfiction books. It's between Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel (I have read Wolf Hall and loved it) and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Any ideas?

message 194: by Noel (new)

Noel (noel-brady) I haven't read either of these, but I'm going to vote for Bring Up the Bodies since you've had a good experience with the author before. Plus I like the title.
