Marianne Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Absolutely the best.

Kristin (kmmscorpio12) | 3 comments I'm reading book #5 in the Kate Daniels series. I had difficulty w/ the 1st 2 books (boring). If you can get past them the series gets really good by book #3. They are action packed w/ a bit of romance. The authors are a husband and wife writing team. The romance is a bit lack luster; anti-climax, but again the action scenes are great! Good recommendation!

Butler and Parable of the Talents (Earthseed, #2) by Octavia E. Butler . Octavia E. Butler was so highly regarded by science fiction writers and readers that she won a MacArthur genius grant. I believe she is the only sff author to have done so.

Amen to those!! I'm rereading Butler's Lilith's Brood: Dawn / Adulthood Rites / Imago series and loving it all over again. It's a post-apocalyptic book of an entirely different kind.

Adam Jacoby | 1 comments I had a lot of fun reading Dies the Fire though it is less UF.

Sharon Michael | 111 comments My favorite post apocalyptic series by far starts with Dies the Fire (Emberverse, #1) by S.M. Stirling Stirling is one of my favorite authors anyway and does a super job with this one. I've read all three, but the first is definitely the best for me. No vampires, no zombies ... just a worldwide EMP 'strike' that kicks civilization back to the pre-industrial age.

The followup series with the 'next generation' I didn't find nearly as fascinating.

literally about what happens after the world is invaded by the angles

Bryan | 6 comments If you can find them the 5th Millennium series by S.M. Stirling and Shirley Meier are well worth checking out.

Saber and Shadow: A New Adventure in the Fifth Millennium is the first one (IIRC).

I'm not sure any are still in print, but I see them often enough at used book stores, they shouldn't bee too hard to find.

At one time I noticed that all my favourite authors seem to have surnames beginning with 'B'. Butler, Bujold, Brin, Butcher...

I loved encountering Butler. The first book I read was [bookcover:Mind of My Mind|116254] which seemed so very different from any of the other SF I had read at that time. In hindsight I suspect that the different perspective of an African American woman comes through in a wonderful way in comparison to the mostly European male voices I had heard up to that point.

A wonderful story teller with a strong voice! Such a loss to us all that she has passed away.
