F.M. Busby had a series of short stories about a fellow who was friends with someone who could go back in time to "replay" events. "Balancing Act" and "Backup Systems" were two of the stories I read, but it looks like neither of them were collected. That's a good suggestion - In http://www.amazon.com/Crisis-James-E-..., the hero keeps going back in time to solve the problems of the world - but each time he succeeds, he forgots what happened. The first story in the book was in Wollheim's "Best of SF" collection in 1978
