Please be courteous to others and don't post too many "spoilers" without at least posting what chapter you are on so others know if you are further ahead than what they themselves are. You may even use spoiler tags if you wish.

Most of all...Enjoy the book & the discussions.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'm done. I actually didn't think it was going to get picked, so I listened to it a few months ago.

Anyway, if any of you still aren't sure you want to have a listen, esp. if the reason is that you read it in print years ago, as I did, I recommend you do pick it up. Well done audio, and a story with enough depth to warrant a second experience.

I wonder, too, if I read an abridgement, or perhaps a novella that got developed into the book, when I read this years ago... there's much more with Ender's siblings, and(view spoiler) than I remembered....

Christine | 1 comments The "Ender's Game" novel that we all know and love was based on a short story by the same author that appeared in "Analog" magazine in the 1970's.

I've listened to this audiobook twice so far, in addition to this entire series and the parallel "Shadow" series. I highly recommend this partial-cast recording, led and produced by Stefan Rudnicki.

I'm planning to listen through again in preparation for the film premiere this November.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Yes Christine, thanks for reminding us of the short story, but I think I encountered something 'in between' - maybe in the 80s...

In any case, I have no interest in the movie. For one, the boy is too old. As Card says in the afterward, the *point* is that he's just a little kid.

Cheryl (cherylllr) My teen son says he can hardly bear to read anything else after this, because most books are not nearly so amazing. He's also been impressed by Lord of the Flies and The House of the Scorpion. And right now his class at school is reading Iron and Silk, so I'm reading it too, and it is bewitching both of us. So, iow, if you liked this, try those.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok, I looked for discussion questions online for this book, and found this one I liked for this group:

6. Ender's Game has often been cited as a good book to read by readers who are not fans of science fiction. Why does it appeal to both fans of science fiction and those who do not usually read science fiction?

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ooh, good point. The book had plenty of technology, and 'what-if' motifs, for the SF fan, but it was mostly the human drama that made it so strong, I agree.

Robin P I read this book with a group right at the beginning of the first Gulf War, which was the first time I was aware of drones and remote systems controlling warplanes. So it was frighteningly relevant, probably more so today. I agree that making Ender older than a child changes the book too much.

Cheryl (cherylllr) oh, good point... eek...
