Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Did you enjoy reading "The House on the Strand"? Or did you miss it and have always wanted to read a Daphne du Maurier book? Maybe like me you are a convert already and would like to reread one.

Whichever it is, please join us for our readalong in January.

Which book would you like us to read? Suggestions here please, and I'll make up a list for us to vote on in a couple of weeks, by 15th November.

message 2: by Portia (new)

Portia Rebecca, please.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I second Rebecca!

message 4: by Holly (last edited Oct 31, 2013 07:34AM) (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) I read Rebecca earlier this month, and I'd definitely recommend it. I'm hopefully getting the Daphne Du Maurier collection from The Book People for Christmas (£6.99 for 5 books, I'm so getting it!), so I'll actually have copies by then.

I'll have to look deeper into which book I'd want to read, so I'll get back to you regarding what I would like specifically. But I'm in regardless of what book it is!

message 5: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I've read Rebecca, so I'd rather read one of the others, although I'll still join in if Rebecca is chosen!

Me too, I liked Rebecca a lot, that's why I want to try more. I'll join in with the discussion if everyone else reads this though.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I will be reading Rebecca in feb with Jenny anyway so maybe a more obscure book lots if people haven't read would be more appropriate for this readalong.

message 8: by Portia (new)

Portia How about My Cousin Rachael? I read it ages ago (decades) and would love a re-read to discuss with everyone. Ok, there are my two suggestions. Off to carve pumpkins! I'll join in with any book but Rule Brittania. I read it when it first came out in hardcover and I remember how sad I felt learning that one of my favorite writers disliked Americans enough to make us the bad guys on her final work. Is it cynical of me to wonder if she saved it for last so as not to lose American sales? :P

Well, enough ranting. I still have pumpkins to carve. Happy Haunting, everyone!

Aaron, these comments may be intended as humor but I for one am not amused. Could you please cut it out? Otherwise, I am afraid that we may have to remove you from the group.

I'd be happy to read My Cousin Rachel - it's one I definitely want to read.

message 11: by Portia (new)

Portia Shirley, back in the 1970s I saw the movie starring Richard Burton. I may have to view it again :)

January doesn't work for me but that's one I have on my TBR.

Sounds good, I should watch it - but after I have read it, of course!

message 14: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I won't have time in January, but everybody who would like to read Rebecca with Heather and I is more than welcome to join us in February. Otherwise: Heather there's no need to tie yourself to our February readalong, if Rebecca is chosen here feel free to just join. I'll just have to be a month behind ;)

message 15: by Pink (new)

Pink There are a few Du Maurier books that I'd like to try and it seems like she's proving quite a hit with a lot of us. How about reading My Cousin Rachel in January, as this seems quite popular. Then sticking to February for Jenny and Heather's readalong of Rebecca and we could pick another one for March if anyone wants to continue.....just a thought :)

I'd like My Cousin Rachel in January.

message 17: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Oh wow -15 messages before I came back to this thread! Including a deleted one??? Thank you Leslie for that :)

OK, I had not picked up that there was already a readalong for "Rebecca" in February, so I suggest anyone who wants to piles in with Jenny and Heather for that one, and we exclude "Rebecca" from the January readalong.

Which leaves us so far with "My Cousin Rachel." I'd also suggest thinking about The Scapegoat and Jamaica Inn

Feel free to suggest others too. And we'll leave the final list to vote on until 15th, to give others a chance, OK?

And Pink, great idea to carry on through if lots of us like her style. Maybe you could host March? (I can't believe I'm talking about March 2014!!! LOL)

message 18: by Katy (new)

Katy | 422 comments I would love to participate. I've heard My Cousin Rachel is fantastic

message 19: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments Would like to join you all if that's ok. Just finished Rebecca and though didn't like the main protagonist I really liked the writing. Jamaica Inn looks great.

message 20: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Welcome Katy and Tracey. It looks as though we'll get some good discussions going :)

message 21: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments Lovely.. roll on New Year :)

message 22: by Pink (new)

Pink Jamaica Inn and The Birds are also on my list, so hopefully we can work through a few of her books in early 2014. I'm looking forward to starting in January, just have to finish all my 2013 books first!

message 23: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Yes, Pink I'd really like to read more of her short stories (The Birds is one, as you'll know) as she published loads of collections - and they kept being regrouped too, which is a bit confusing! I didn't mention it here to start with as I though it was just going to be one readalong, but if we make it an ongoing "Daphne du Maurier"-fest then we should certainly look at the short stories I think before some of the lesser novels, which I personally don't think are nearly as good.

message 24: by Pink (new)

Pink Sounds good to me Jean, I think there is a lot of variety to choose from

message 25: by Faye (new)

Faye | 102 comments I already plan to read Jamaica Inn, so that would work perfectly for me.

message 26: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (universe_beats) | 401 comments I'd love to read My Cousin Rachel too!

message 27: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Great to have you with us, Faye and Anastasia. I'll put up a list on 15th of all the ones we've mentioned, and who's said what they want, and then if anyone wants to change their mind they can before they're totted up. Maybe we'll read 3 or 4 of her novels in the next few months!

message 28: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemmagem20) | 460 comments I read Rebecca recently too and really enjoyed it. I have also seen the Book People Deal which I thought looked great, may have to drop a hint.

message 29: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Are there any more people interested in joining us? There's still time to suggest another of her books before 15th.

message 30: by Poornima (new)

Poornima | 37 comments Jean, would like to join in too, thanks!
would vote for Rebecca, its been on my TBR for a long time now! :)

Oh Sorry Jean, missed your suggestion of removing Rebecca from the Jan nomination. Shall try to join in for "My cousin Rachel" . Thanks.

message 32: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Thanks Poornima - there's a readalong already "booked" for Rebecca in February, that's why :) It looks as though "My cousin Rachel" is ahead at the moment!

LauraT (laurata) | 14366 comments Mod
It looks like it Jean!

message 34: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Good suggestion then, Laura! I'd like either that or "The Scapegoat"; really don't mind which though.

message 35: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) Anyone interested in reading Daphne du Maurier's novels, The Book People have got a collection of 5 of her books for £6.99. I'm hopefully getting it for Christmas, but it seems really cheap compared to buying them individually.

I really can't wait for this to get started :) Roll on the New Year!

message 36: by Chatterjak (new)

Chatterjak | 89 comments I've been meaning to read Du Maurier since I was a teenager - so after 20 years it's about time I got around to it! How's that for procrastination? I'd be very happy to read along, whatever the choice is!

message 37: by Pink (new)

Pink I'm looking forward to this one, no matter which book wins the poll :)

message 38: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) Me too!

message 39: by Portia (new)

Portia Me three

message 40: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Hahaha me four! Tell you what I'll put up all the books now, with our names at the side (as I can't create a poll) and if you want to change your vote or add your name just say and I'll amend it. Finish counting by 20th to give everybody a chance. Hope that works for everybody OK.

message 41: by Bionic Jean (last edited Nov 14, 2013 06:41AM) (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) January's nominations:

"My Cousin Rachel" - Portia, Shirley, Pink, Katy, Anastasia, Poornima, Holly

"Jamaica Inn" - Tracey, Faye

"The Scapegoat" - Jean

Anybody else like to join in? Or change their mind?

February:

"Rebecca" with Jenny and Heather and probably a few more of us

March:

We can vote when we get there

message 42: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) I've just had a look and Cousin Rachel sounds good to me, so I'll put my vote to that. I'll be happy to read whatever comes up though!

Portia Good choice, Holly!

message 45: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Thanks Holly - I have added you. It looks pretty clear at the moment, doesn't it? I'd be happy to read the leading one too, but thought I'd add another for variety. Lots of time for more people to join us :)

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

As noted, reading Rebecca in Feb but will be joining with My cousin Rachel or Jamaica inn in January

Have you read all her books, Jean? Are these re-reads for you? I'd like to read The Scapegoat too, so will definitely vote for that in Feb or March!

message 48: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I've just checked and it's 14 out of 17, but nowhere near all her short stories, so I'd be excited about reading those some time. There are so many collections which overlap.

February is "Rebecca", but would everybody like to sort out March's choice now, straight after January's final choice?

message 49: by Pink (new)

Pink I don't mind deciding now, If Jamaica Inn wins for Jan, then I'd vote for My Cousin Rachel for March

message 50: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I'd like to suggest The Parasites for March.
