I'm new to this but it sounds like fun so I'll give it a go. (I actually re-read my entire collection of Sue Grafton - Kinsey Millhone 'Alphabet Mysteries' in Jan/Feb of this year - A to V, but I'll discount them for this purpose as that would ruin the challenge! I might cheat and use Q though...)

Start Date: 1/1/14 - End Date: 4/7/14

A. Altar of Bones- Philip Carter (9/2/14)
B. Beautiful Creatures- Kami Garcia (11/4/14)
C. The Carrier- Sophie Hannah (16/2/14)
D. Deal Breaker- Harlan Coben (23/4/14)
E. Evil Under the Sun - Agatha Christie (27/6/14)
F. Faith- Peter James (14/2/14)
G. Gone Girl- Gillian Flynn (11/3/14)
H. The Hanging Valley- Peter Robinson (27/3/14)
I. The Ivy Chronicles- Karen Quinn (7/5/14)
J. Just Friends - Robyn Sisman (7/6/14)
K. The Kingmaker's Daughter- Philippa Gregory (18/3/14)
L. Lullaby- Claire Seeber (10/4/14)
M. My Sister My Love- Joyce Carol Oates (16/4/14)
N. Never Saw it Coming- Linwood Barclay (13/4/14)
O. The Other Queen- Philippa Gregory (25/2/14)
P. Possession- Peter James (12/2/14)
Q. Queen in Waiting - Norah Lofts (4/7/14)
R. The Rose Petal Beach- Dorothy Koomson (9/4/14)
S. Sacrifice- S.J Bolton (7/2/14)
T. To Kill a Mockingbird- Harper Lee (20/3/14)
U. Unseen - Karin Slaughter (11/6/14)
V. Village of Stone - Xiaolu Guo (7/5/14)
W. Want To Play? - P.J Tracy (27/4/14)
X. XO - Jeffery Deaver (15/6/14)
Y. You're Next - Gregg Hurwitz (19/6/14)
Z. Z for Zachariah - Robert C. O'Brien (14/5/14)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Wow, you'd be through almost the whole alphabet with Kinsey Millhone, Caroline! (I loved those books, haven't read any since around 2000-ish, so I'm still mid-alphabet, I suppose. I should get back to them :D.

Welcome to the challenge! "Q" is for sure a tricky one, so I'd use it, if I were you :D.

We have an A-Z author variation, too. That one is even trickier. You should give it a go as well.

I was actually just looking at the author A-Z challenge and trying to decide whether to have a go. I think I will :)

Welcome to the challenge, Gavin! It's a fun one, especially near the end of the year, as you try to hunt up a title you'd never have noticed otherwise, were it not for having to fill in a letter :)

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

I've been looking through my TBR list to see if I have any books on my shelves to fill some gaps and I'm struggling to find titles for E, I, Q, X, Y & Z.
I would be really grateful for any suggestions. Genre isn't really important as I'll read just about anything. Thanks :)

If you looks at my TBR I have numerous books for each letter except X...I'm working on that one though.

ETA: here's a Listopia with some X Titles: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/6...

message 64: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Those are tricky ones! I'd suggest peeking at other people's lists. I find some good options that way, often :).

Not late at all! I joined last year's in October ;-). As long as it's the same calendar year, and your memory is long, or your reading speed fast, or both (heh), it's not too late! Besides, you are WELL on your way to done. Happy reading!

Julie looks like you just about have this challenge complete, but you forgot the letter "X".

:D Maybe Julie subconsciously noticed that "X" is a tricky one, and slid on by it without realizing it! funny ~~

I was looking at that part of her list too, but my mind was 'caught' by the 'shiny object' ie A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail. I think I may have that title on my kindle .... :D

Oh shoot - I'll quickly add that, actually I copied the alphabet-list from someone else in the thread so it will be missing elsewhere as well ;-)

We may have to get Sherlock on the case and find the other missing "X". We can call it "The Case of the Missing X"

Hmm.. there should be enough Queens... or Queenies (one by Alice Munro) out there for a Q, or The Quiet American which would be my suggestion if you haven't read it yet. (I haven't either but been interested.)

message 79: by Julie (new)

Julie | 606 comments uh, should try The Quiet American, remember reading Graham Green back in high school and enjoying it - thx for the recommendation Tytti :-)

Hmm. Either I can't read, or we are not doing well with X!

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 333 comments For those that love quirky books full of silliness, there's always Xone of Contention by Piers Anthony. I ran into his books by accident in high school and I think I've read every one of them since (difficult task, actually, as he's quite prolific). His stuff can be hard to classify sometimes, but I'd say they run to the scifi and fantasy genres mostly.

Good one, Aprilleigh! I'll add that one to try for X. Now maybe I can get that letter finished before December.

message 86: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 333 comments The good thing about this series is that you don't have to start at the beginning to enjoy the book - I think I started with #9 which I found in the paperback books at a local supermarket.

Hi Fran, welcome to the challenge! You can make an A-Z tally sheet for yourself that you can edit to add new titles as you read them. It's fun reading through the alphabet. Can get tricky with some of those scarce letter :)

I have, it was quite good - lots of twists and turns. Haven't read many Jeffery Deaver before but I think I'm going to start looking out for more of his books.

Just got E & Q to go on this challenge now and have a couple of ideas for each.
