Laura DeBruce | 7 comments Dear Cozy Mystery Fans,
I could use your help! My new book, The Riddle of Prague, is a YA Thriller but many readers have recently described the book as a mystery. There are many mysterious elements including murders, shadowy characters, and the mystery of The Nomad's true identity. I would be happy to send readers a copy of the e-book (or the paperback) for their input as to whether I can rightly classify The Riddle as a Mystery and/or a Cozy Mystery.
Please let me know if you are up for the task!
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Laura DeBruce

Hi laura,

If you're trying to figure out what makes a book a cozy, I suggest you check out our discussion, What do you consider a cozy mystery?. Good luck!

Nancy (gr-nancy-a) | 278 comments A cozy is also "a tidy package of a book".
No Magnus opus with lots of pages.
I like that!

Laura is specifically looking for a few test readers who will read her book (she'll send a free copy) to see if it qualifies as a cozy mystery. There is no cussing or sex, it's YA, and has a lot of mystery elements to it. I didn't have time to help her out but thought some other group members might be able to.

Laura DeBruce | 7 comments Thank you, Elowyn! If you send me a message with your email, I will happily gift you a kindle version or a paperback today.

Thanks, Nancy and Heather, for the input. I've read the discussion and enjoyed learning about what makes a cozy a cozy.

As to how The Riddle stacks up:

Quirky characters? Yes. Lots of them.

Body in the first chapter? No, but the first body appears on page 30 and a couple more follow soon thereafter.

Clean language? Yes.

Lack of sex? Yes, although there is flirting.

Lack of gory violence? The gore is only implied.

Small community? The story takes place in Prague so, no. Although Praguers have a saying that Prague is really just a small village so maybe...

Cats? Yes! Two of them although they play a minor role. There are dogs, too (one of whom was modeled after my Golden who spent much of his last years under my table as I wrote the book).

Could you pass the book to your mother-in-law or grandmother? Absolutely!

Is it a "tidy package of a book?" Yes!

The Riddle of Prague is a mystery, for sure, and it could make for a good cozy. Perhaps Elowyn and other readers will help determine that.

Nancy (gr-nancy-a) | 278 comments I recently finished Prague Counterpoint.
How do I contact you to give you my mailing address?
(I use my smartphone so rarely see the goodreads home page site which has more info.)

I should have included my email address:

Kathy | 97 comments Also happy to help. It is probably going to be harder for me as I don't have a Kindle or a Nook. But I have done a great deal of editing in my career. (Not that I would even presume to do that with your work.)

I wish often that I had talent enough to write and would want to encourage anyone who did.

Laura DeBruce | 7 comments Thanks, Everyone!
I am so grateful for your input. Nancy and Karen, I am sending your paperbacks today. Val, I will gift you the Kindle version asap. Kathy, if you send me a message with your address, I'll send you a copy, too.
Looking forward to your feedback! I'd love your reviews here and on Amazon.
For all of you true mystery fans, I'd also like to know at what point you figured out who the mystery characters are.... IF you figure them out, that is. :-)
Laura

Leona (mnleona) | 156 comments I read this book and it was a really good read. I guess I would not describe it as a cozy but more of a mystery. I still have it on my table and will reread it.

message 16: by Laura (new)

Laura DeBruce | 7 comments Thank you very much, Leona! The more that I learn about the various genres, the more that I realize that The Riddle of Prague is, indeed, a YA Thriller and most likely not a Cozy Mystery.
I am grateful to all of you who read the book. I would love to hear from the rest of you, too!
Many thanks from a new author!
Laura
