Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Hi Judy! *waves*

I'm worried about my copy of Vanity Fair now. I swear mine is only 300pp so how small must the writing be inside?!

message 3: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments Yay!! Judy's back. :) I love the way you've linked your books.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Judy wrote: "Hi Rusalka, *waves back* my copy of Vanity Fair is 754 pages, could yours be abridged? If it isn't abridged, I do not envy you reading that microscopic print!"

I'm going to check it out when I get home... Lucky one lens in my glasses acts like a magnifying glass if it's not being worn. That trick has gotten me through a whole heap of exams with tiny writing on my cheat sheets.

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Judy! Nice to see you! I love the way you linked. I hope you love Ocean Park. That was a goodie. *waves*

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I looked. It's on Bible thin paper. It is 640 pages it seems (whacks that in the pile). But I took some photos so you can see why i was confused.

Last book read type distribution, compared to this one. Not too bad. Bit tighter. Although Vanity Fair is an inch shorter than the PD James.

Vanity Fair is 640pp, PD James book is 256pp. Very little difference!

message 8: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Judy. Very creative to use the titles to spell a word! I had to look up a couple of your books. I have heard of three of them, but the first was new. Looks interesting, but HUGE!

I read South of Broad. It was great! I will be watching for your comments on it as well as the others.

message 9: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Re Vanity Fair. Did you read The Pilgrim's Progress? I have a copy on my Nook and have looked at it a couple of times, but never committed to read. I was always curious about it from reading Little Women. I know that Vanity Fair has something to do with it. Just curious.

I agree! cool idea. :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments If it was me, I'd just use message #1 and Bold the header for each section. Mind you, editing that could get a bit cumbersome later in the year. You could reserve the next few messages for Mickey, etc right after this message. You want to keep your convo messages.

message 12: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments @ Vanity Fair edited by John Carey. "The book's title comes from John Bunyan's allegorical story The Pilgrim's Progress, first published in 1678 and still widely read a the time of Thackeray's novel. Vanity fair refers to a stop along the pilgrim's progress: a never-ending fair held in a town called Vanity, which is meant to represent man's sinful attachment to worldly things."

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments It's so nice to see you, Judy. I've been thinking about you. ((((((J))))))

message 14: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Oh and I stole your idea lol. I'm thinking of spelling Slicks. I love the way your mind works ;)

message 15: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments I haven't put it up yet. I keep changing it lol. Maybe tomorrow.

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments Hello Judy *waves frantically til her arm hurts*. Good to see you'll be joining me, Janice and some others in just aiming for Slick-ness. :-D

message 17: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Good luck, Judy! An ambitious start.

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments Those books that nag - they're worse than nagging husbands/mothers/children.

message 19: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Judy wrote: "Have you read it before, Laura?"

Nope. Not sure but I may have removed it from my list. I'm looking for books that move along. That may be a good one, but I hesitate to read it while I'm craving thrillers and mysteries.

message 20: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Will do! :D

message 21: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments Enjoy, Judy. I'm going to be starting with my style of classic, The Shining. Hehehehe!

My daughter got Vanity Fair for Xmas, have to say I was tempted to sneak it into my gift pile. Will be anxious to hear thoughts on it.

Haha. Have you read it before? That should be a good one to start with."

Yes. I read it back in the mid 70's. I have Doctor Sleep slated for Slick's Slugs. After some encouragement here, I decided to reread The Shining first and reworked my intended chunkster reads to accommodate it.

message 25: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments Not at all. I'll be listening to it on audiobook this time and I'm looking forward to it.

message 26: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4030 comments Yay, Judy! I like your connecting idea. Those look like some pretty heavy books (pun intended). Good luck!

message 27: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Congratulations Judy!

message 28: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments No, I've not. Should I? Does it remind you of any other classic?

message 29: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments Yay! First one is in the bag. :)

message 30: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments If I ever get a chance to read VF, Judy, I will have to get you to tell me WHICH 350 pages to skip! LOL! I keep tripping over Pilgrims Progress, which I have on my Nook. (((Sigh))) someday...

message 31: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments What's next? My youngest daughter is listening to South of Broad. She LOVES it. We have both read it, but she wanted to listen, so I got it from the library for her.

message 32: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments You are a great moderator at AtW Judy! I read South of Broad quite awhile ago and did enjoy it although my rating doesn't seem to reflect that. I was rather stingy with ratings initially when I joined Goodreads.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Judy wrote: "I am listening to South of Broad and getting ready to read Black Hawk Down."

LOL! If I didn't have so many other things to listen to and read, I would re-listen to SoB again before I take it back to the library, but I have to move on. Enjoy!

message 35: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 1255 comments I enjoyed Pat Conroy's Beach Music, and I just read and loved, loved, loved The Lords of Discipline! You have peaked my interest in South of Broad...

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am so sorry you did not like the Conroy book, Judy.

message 39: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments Did you see the movie BHD? I saw it a couple of times and liked it well enough. I've wondered how the book would fare.

message 40: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments I wonder if the book has more background detail than the movie. I don't recall that the movie showed any real horrific details (other than the usual war flick fare). But then, my memory can be a bit hazy.

message 41: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments And then, again, maybe the movie is not milder. The scene with the severed artery is one that stayed with me.

message 42: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I always find reading it so much worse than watching it. How funny. Somehow my mind imagining it grosses me out so much more than what a Director can do. I guess as I am my own Director and think about things I can't stand/stomach.

message 43: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm with Rusalka. I have a very vivid imagination so tend to conjure up all sorts in my mind when I read. If I watch a film adaptation after I've read a book, it's often much tamer than what I've thought up!

message 44: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments I love when I am pleasantly surprised by a book. Hope you keep laughing your way through the rest of the book!
