Tim Avery | 2 comments I read a book several years ago and can't for the life of me remember what it was called. I believe (but am not positive) the book was written in the 1990's or 2000's.

PLOT SUMMARY:

A team of deep sea divers are sucked into some kind of vortex and captured by an advanced race of humans. These humans have apparently been living under the sea floor for millions of years. They are the ones responsible for "seeding" the current race of humans on the surface.

The underwater civilization is a utopia (no crime, hunger, disease, etc.) Moreover, these humans are basically immortal, as they have developed advanced technology that allows them to "download" their consciousness into a computer as needed, and then back into a new body created through cloning.

The underwater humans captured the divers because they are seeking information on the surface humans, who they can no longer reliably spy on because there is a greater chance of detection due to the advancing technology on the surface.

The divers are told they can never go back and see their families and loved ones -- but is this really such a bad thing since they are now members of this utopian society where they will never die? Apparently the answer is yes, because at least some of them try to escape back to the surface.
